person attending. This is the same price as last year and the food will be excellent. Please send in your reservation early so we can order the proper amount of food. We will be having the Toys for Tots collection as we have in past years. Let me know if you would like to help decorate the Cabana Club.

Hello Fellow Rockhounds, Thanks to everyone who filled out a Time and Talent sheet. This will be a great help to the Nominating Committee. Thanks to Stephen May, June Harris and Michelle Smith for volunteering to serve on the Nominating Committee. The Time and Talent sheets also help the President when it comes time to appoint committees. There are several committee positions that are fairly easy. It would be a good place for a newer member to get involved. The Nominating Committee will announce their recommendations for new officers at the October meeting. Elections and Silent Auction will be held at the November meeting.

There will be a potluck social before the October meeting. We will start at 6:30 PM. Please bring a dish (salad, side dish, main dish or dessert) to share for at least six servings. The club will provide drinks. Guests are welcome to join us. Come and have a good time! If you are going to any Rock and Gem shows in the near future, and you see a dealer that you would like to see at our festival, please take down their contact information and send it to me. Include their E-mail address, if they have one. I am always looking for dealers with something new and different.

The Board has reserved the Cabana Club for our annual Installation Dinner on December 6th. It will be catered by Willow Street. The reservation form can be printed from the Website, or you can look here in the Breccia. The cost will be $10 per

Silent Auction at the November general meeting

Member Displays Report By Rick Kennedy

November 22, 2016

At the September meeting, Rick Kennedy brought a beautiful specimen of amethyst. He prizes this a one he found himself.”.

What's That? Items will be offered for bid and are brought by members/guests and displayed on tables. Each item has a bid sheet. Bids are in 50 cent increments. The last name on the list wins the item, and pays the cashier. What to Bring? Bring just about anything. Items do not have to be gem or mineral related. We have auctioned off homemade candies, homemade cookies, plants, pottery, tools, and thingamajigs. And, of course, there are always gems, minerals and samples of our member skills.

For the October meeting Members are invited to bring items that they wish to display.

“Bragging Rights” Alan Achor - Chairman Winner for September Bragging Rights was Jim Fox with his Tiffany Stone also called Bertrandite.

Bring your item/s, find an empty spot on a table, fill out the sheet/s that will be with your item/s, and get ready to have fun. Remember that your item is a donation to the club and that all money collected goes to help the club. We thank you in advance!

October’s theme will be something metallic.

What Happens Then?

Your club president will announce each break for time to bid on the items. When the whistle blows, that bidding time period is closed. Bidders cannot even start to write their name! There will be three bidding time periods. The president will announce the closing of each period, and the whistle will be blown. At the end of each time period, one of the three tables will be closed, signifying that the last name on any bid sheet wins the item. Example: The table with yellow cat sign is closed. This is the signal that you can go see if you won anything on that table. If so, pick it up and take it to the bankers in the back by the kitchen. Pay for your items and you get your winnings. Payment: Cash or personal check. All proceeds go to the club treasury. Suggestions: Come early to add your item to the fun, and to see what other people have brought that you might like. Bring a tote bag for your goodies. Bring cash or check Questions? Email [email protected]

Each year we have elections. To do that, we have three people from the Board and general membership put together a slate of proposed officers. To get this slate, the nominating committee must ask other members to run for offices. If they know ahead of time who would be willing to run for a particular (or any) office, AND who wouldn’t or couldn’t accept any position for the following year, their job is made much simpler. Please call Randy Harris for further information (831) 438-5150. Please note that many positions can be filled by members with little to no experience, and mentoring is available to anyone who would like to take on a position but is unsure as to how to do the job. Please fill out this sheet to indicate what offices and or committee you are willing to fill, turn it in at the next general meeting, or mail it to Randy Harris, 107 Dell Way, Scotts Valley CA 95066 If you live out of state, you don’t need to do this.

SCVGMS Gem, Mineral and Jewelry Festival Report March 18 & 19, 2017 by June Harris, 2017 Festival Chairman

The Festival set-up day, March 17, 2017, is speeding towards us, and everything thus far is looking really good. We will be in the Pavilion hall this year, instead of the Exposition hall. The layout is currently being worked on and it looks like most of the society areas will be in the back area of the building near the roll-up door. This has been planned this way to make sure that we have the most expedient method for tear down on March 19th. We should have less distance to travel to our society's trailers and less overlap with the dealers' exit from the building.

so much faster and we all could go home to rest.

Bill Simpson has volunteered to chair the Teardown committee. We are working on making sure that our teardown committee and member helpers have less steps involved to take down their areas. Also, we are asking all committee chairs to make sure their area is completely packed in its containers and moved back to the trailer-loading area. It would be nice if it could be packed away in the trailers, too, but just getting things back to the trailer area would be a great help. Bill will be checking each chairman's area before the committee chairman leaves to make sure everything is packed and moved. Hopefully, this will lead to a more speedy teardown and packing the trailers for storage. We used to be able to complete tear down in two hours, lately it has been closer to four hours with just a few people at the very end. I would really like to see us get back to the two-hour time frame. I know it can be done, it will just require us to be organized and make sure that we all contribute to getting that final step done. I know that everyone is tired, but if everyone took one extra box or cart full of festival materials to the trailers, we would be done

The dealer contracts went out last month and we already have quite a few back. If you have met a dealer at another show that you think would make a great addition to our festival, please send the dealer's name, business name, and contact information to Randy or June Harris. They will be mailed a contract and added to our waiting list if they choose to return the contract. New dealers are added based on the number of dealers we have in each category and the size of the booths available. We try our best to have a good mix of dealers with a widest variety of items for sale, meaning we don't like to have too many dealers selling the same items.

Our next Festival planning meeting will be October 19th at Mountain Mike's Pizza on Hamilton in Campbell at 7 PM. Dinner is available for $5. per attendee with the society picking up the remaining cost. Dinner is pizza, salad bar, and a soft drink for the above price. This is the last meeting for any new ideas or changes to be made. We need to nailed down the layout so that we can work toward making sure that we are taking dealer contracts that fit into our plan.

We will have sign-up sheets at the next meeting for those of you who have a favorite area to donate your time at the festival. Most shifts are 2-3 hours long and we will need everyone to contribute a minimum of a few hours. Remember we need your help for set-up, during the festival, and during teardown. Please be generous with your time. Stay tuned for more on the festival next month. 7
