From the President Ok so, here we are halfway through the winter. It seems like its going fast to me. The expo is just around the corner so make sure you plan accordingly to help out the club with your show duties. Also don’t forget about the work party meeting. This is a mandatory meeting! In other news we had our first club swap shop in many years. I think it was a big success given that it was just word of mouth. We had plenty of people displaying their stuff. We could have used some more buyers but that will come next year. We will make it even better, this was just a test run. So make sure you tell all your friends and buddies that we will have another one next year. Thank you to all that showed up!

I’m looking forward to our activity meeting in March where we will have a static model display. Bring out all those winter projects that are finished or any other planes that you’re proud of. And let us all check them out. It doesn’t even have to be pretty, maybe just interesting, or unique. There will be some informal and fun judging with prizes to top it all off. It will be worthwhile as we all can take time to get together and enjoy our hobby as a club. I have to apologize up front. The next meeting Thursday February 10th I will be unable to attend as I will be in Las Vegas for work, sounds fun but it’s not. Vice President Tom Strohscher will be filling in for me. The unofficial contest schedule is out for approval by the board prior to being released. Our flying season is shaping up to be a great one with plenty of first time money making events planned for our year. I look forward to seeing everyone soon. President Scott Bauerschmidt

On the Work Bench Roger Holly and the Safety Committee may need to keep an eye on Steve Guerrero this spring. His first Extra 300S is in pieces. The 2.0 version is a .61-91 scale ARF with a 63” wing span. He’s powering a 16x8 prop with an electric motor. Good luck Steve.

James (JC) Pelow is making progress on his P-47 Thunderbolt fighter. The stab is built and glassed. Scale hinges still needs filled and panel line and hinge covers will be added. The fuselage has been sheeted too. The cowl is almost large enough for a small V6.

John Schinkel has found another way to fly when the winter weather prevents him from flying at the club field. Here’s a picture of him on his way from Fort Wayne to Chicago in a "Harbor Freight" airplane. That looks like a cool setup!

2017 Show Information 2017 Expo Door Security The 2017 Expo at Seagate Centre will be April 7, 8, and 9. All Regular, Associate and Prospective members are required to work at the Expo. Newer members, if you have not requested or been assigned to be on any other committee detail, you will be required to work on door security. Please let me know as soon as possible but no later than March 4, 2017. The earlier you notify me of your preferred dates and times, the better chance you have of getting your request. I would prefer if you would email your information. The information I need is all of the times that you are available to work and the times that you cannot work. Everyone will be working four shifts. If you have any special request or preference let me know and I will try to honor your request. If you do ask for a special request I will also need other options if I cannot fill your first preference. Also, let me know if want the same schedule that you had last year. Please realize I will do my best to give everyone the shifts they want but it is not always possible and I will try to come as close as I can, that is why I need the total times you are available to work. Please do not request all back to back shifts if possible. This makes it harder to accommodate other member’s requests. The following will be the 2017 shift schedule. It is the same as last year. Friday - April, 7th Saturday – April 8th Sunday - April 9th 6:30 AM to 8:45 AM 6:30 AM to 8:45 AM 6:30 AM to 8:45 AM 8:45 AM to11:00 AM 8:45 AM to11:00 AM 8:45 AM to11:00 AM 11:00 AM to 1:15 PM 11:00 AM to 1:15 PM 11:00 AM to 1:15 PM 1:15 PM to 3:30 PM 1:15 PM to 3:30 PM 1:15 PM to 3:30 PM (close) 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM (close) 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM (close) You can email, mail or call with your information. My email is [email protected], address is 1220 Eleanor Ave., Toledo, OH 43612, and phone is (419) 478-5788. My preference is email, please. Emailing me will insure that I have your correct email address. I will email the schedule to you about two weeks prior to the Expo.

2017 THURSDAY EXPO EXHIBITOR SET UP It really saves the club money on hired door guards if club members volunteer for door security for the Thursday Exhibitor th Set Up. The date for the exhibitor set up is Thursday, April 6 . The set up time is from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The Friday, Saturday and Sunday door guards cannot shift to Thursday. There are not enough members working door security on Fri., Sat. and Sun. to allow any shifting to Thursday. What is needed are members willing to work extra on Thursday to save the club money so we do not need to have Rent-A-Guards. The hours worked on Thursday will not replace the hours you are needed at your regular weekend assignment. This door security is simpler than the weekend assignments since there are no tickets or hand stamps, only Exhibitors and club members. II have two shifts; 7:45 AM to 2:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 8:15 PM. There will be relief for lunch and breaks. Chairs will also be provided at each door. Thursday parking details will be available as they become available. Replacing the Rent-A-Guards will only work if we can have enough members to work all day. I will need members for both shifts or we will still need Rent-A-Guards, which defeats the purpose. If I can get 28 members to work on Thursday then there can be two guards at each door and the two guards can relieve each other as necessary. Volunteering for Thursday is open to all regular, associate, perspective and life members. Even if you have assignments for Friday, Saturday or Sunday you are still welcome to volunteer to work on Thursday. I will need to know if you can help on Thursday by March 4, 2017. This above-and-beyond volunteering for Thursdays has been greatly appreciated. One of the reasons we have such a wonderful Club and flying field is members like you. Thank you so much! Let's continue to work together to make this a great show! Mike Vorbau, Expo Security Chairman

R/C Homewreckers, Part 53

In ‘79 it’s a big year for the club as it’ll be an anniversary year for the conference. Our 25th and as such would require special awards and other items considered ‘special’ to commemorate the year. The club went away from the usual trophies and purchased silver tea sets of which the top three places in each category would be awarded. A complete set containing a tray, tea pot, water pot and a vessel for sugar and cream. Models judged 4th and 5th would receive a silver tray. The display containing the awards was dazzling! Lederman is President, we’re meeting at the Union Hall and at the moment, nothing bigger is happening in the world of model airplanes, boats and cars. Looking ahead, the articles written after the show by all the top people in the industry had nothing but good things to say however, I’m ahead of myself. (If you ever have the opportunity to get into any old model magazines, read any of the articles on this conference and all the great comments they made relative to this show and all of those previous.) Meanwhile, prepping for this special edition of the conference, besides the great trophies, would require other special touches as the club wanted people to remember this one. For example, we’ve been hiring a show queen each year but for this occasion the Expo Committee decided two would be more appropriate. So off to the modeling agency went Co-Director Hisey and two girls were hired to represent the club. Unfortunately the idea turned sour as we had agreed to provide a hotel room and dinner for the two girls. They invited their boy-friends who arrived, had dinner plus drinks. They had a big party among themselves and charged it all on us. However the hotel notified Hisey and he went to the modeling agency and they took care of all the extra charges. I’d imagine they got into the girls pretty hard because they weren’t very happy with the whole tale.

Model display Chairman Joe Vislay with Co-Queens Robin Carron (l) and Lori Lahnala ( r ) In the early spring the club was embroiled in a noise controversy which threatened to shut us down. A neighbor complaint led several members to take a stand against flying pylon races with un-muffled engines. These races were loud by nature and anything loud was upsetting to certain individuals. A few club members led a charge to protect ourselves from legal actions from a court which divided the club between them and us. No solution that would satisfy both sides entirely but the pylon guys, of which this writer was one of them, realized that having a place to fly was much more important than any one pylon race. Having a place to legally fly at all times was extremely more important than a court restricted one. Flying over our Southern boundary was one of our biggest problems and probably one that was violated more than any other. A By-Law change was proposed that contained several restrictions. A vote on this proposal or the general concept was taken by secret ballot at the July meeting and was defeated by a huge margin. So obviously this was going to be a tough nut to crack. More related to this problem next month as we report on a law suit naming our club as defendants. For some reason, an election of new officers was mentioned in the archives with a date announced as the first meeting in September, yet no results are to be found. I can tell that Rick Lederman was re-elected President and that Jack Van Hee is Recording Secretary yet in another set of minutes, Daly Macgrayne is listed as Secretary so we deduced that Daly came on board replacing Mr Van Hee, but the remainder of the officers are unknown to this writer. I’m sure nothing more than an oversite yet nothing related is anywhere to be found so I can’t tell you who all the new officers were except they were all club members!. Interesting huh? One group I can report on with names however, is the Expo Committee. That group of volunteers was headed up by Bob Hisey and Don Belote as Co-Directors, John Root took care of finance. Roy Hinger was in charge of security and this writer did trophies. The raffle was the responsibility of Ed Grabbenstetterand model judging was administered by Joe Vislay. The trading post managed by Bill Rupert and communications was in the capable hands of Rick Lederman. A policy concerning this group as I re-call was that these people all had to be people who got along with each other. They’re relationship to the other club members was not as important as each other because there was too much work to be done and bickering only slowed things down. I remember Hisey saying the last thing I want to hear from somebody on this committee is “I told You So!”. Supporting each other was much more important. Next month….Lawsuit!! Stay tuned for more……Wayne Yeager

Club t-shirts and hats will be available for order soon. The design and details are still being worked out. T-shirt prices will be $16 for club members.
