WHAT’S NEW IN THE ELEMENTARY? What’s new! In the elementary we have implemented the Expanding Expressions Tool (EET) to help improve our writing skills kindergarten through sixth grade. The EET uses a little caterpillar, Eetchy, to help develop and improve student’s oral and written expression. Eetchy is a tool that allows students to visually see what they need to describe an item. BIOLOGY PARTNERS WITH UNIVERSITY OF FINDLAY On Friday, February 24th, Dr. White was here from the University of Findlay to teach our students a shortened lab on Human Genetics. They learned about a molecular biology technique called the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). PCR was developed in the mid 1980s and has revolutionized the field of molecular biology. Using this technique, we can make over a billion copies on one small piece of DNA for the analysis in just a few hours rather than the weeks it took for the development of this technique. PCR is now the most used molecular technique on the planet. It is used for everything from disease testing to paternity testing, to medical agnostics, to animal and plant identification, and the list goes on and on. ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS IN THE HIGH SCHOOL Bluffton University English Festival - Lindsey Sellman’s poem "Toothache" placed 2nd in the Bluffton University English Festival Poetry Contest. Bluffton Professor Jeff Gundy, along with input from the visiting author Julia Spicher Kasdorf, chose the winners of the poetry contest. Congratulations, Lindsey! Modern Woodmen School Speech Contest - Congratulations to the following 7th and 8th grade students who will be competing in the Local Modern Woodmen School Speech Contest: Brooke Hellman, Grace Fischbach, Haven Knippen, Grace Martz, Marina Lucas, Chloe Fields, Nick Wurst, Chase Suever, Ellie Lindeman, and Savanna Siebeneck. The contest will be held in the auditeria at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 5th. Delphos Area Art Guild - Congratulations to our students who swept the Literary Arts category at the Delphos Area Art Guild US Bank Art Show. In junior high, Grace Fischbach placed first for

her short story, and Carmella Fondriest placed second for her poem. In high school, Lindsey Sellman placed first and second for two of her poems. PUTNAM COUNTY ARTS FESTIVAL PC Art Festival - The following Fort Jennings students received "Best of Show" for their art projects: Devyn Wiechart for her mixed media, "One of Them" and Lindsey Sellman for her sculpture, "Harry Potter Totem". Fort Jennings band students participating in the 2017 Putnam County Arts Festival were sophomore, Lexi Stant, tenor saxophone; and seniors, Dylan Wiechart, French horn, Lauren Core, flute. Recognized for her fourth year participating, senior, Devyn Wiechart, flute. In other Art News - Congratulations to the following students for placing at the Delphos Area Art Guild - U.S. Bank Art Exhibit this past Friday. Carmella Fondriest placed first in the 3D category. Jessie Calvelage and Grace Fischbach received second place awards. Savannah Siebeneck, Grace Fischbach and Olivia Conley received honorable mentions. FEED THE WORLD – HTTP://OHIOCORNEDUCATION.ORG/ Fort Jennings High School was highlighted in last month’s Feed the World news in the article titled “Class collaborations create ethanol and biodiesel at Fort Jennings”. The Environmental Science class with Mr. Jostpille and the Chemistry class with Mrs. Harmon worked together to create biodiesel and ethanol. In the first experiment, the classes used four different set-ups for their experiment: 2 varieties of sweet corn, Indian corn, and popcorn. Of the four set-ups, the students found the popcorn produced the most alcohol. In the second experiment, the students worked on producing biodiesel. Typically, biodiesel is made from soybeans or used oils such as fryer oil from a restaurant. The Fort Jennings students used virgin vegetable oil. Music Department – Thank you Jennings Local Schools thanks the Dorothy Davis Estate for her recent donation to the Music Department in the amount of $205,815. The Board of Education and music department will use this money to address immediate needs in the music department and will develop a future strategy plan/budget to rehaul instrument inventory that has been a need for several years. THE KING AND I – SCHOOL MUSICAL The music department will be performing the King and I on March 31st and April 1st. Shows will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the auditeria. The show spotlights many high school and elementary students throughout the play.

MATH COMPETITIONS Mr. Horstman’s 8th graders competed in the MathCounts competition finishing 8th at the Lima Competition and Jessie Foust finished 21st overall. Michael Fields, Connor Hoersten, Derek Luersman, and Griffin Morman finished 16th out of 53 teams at the Trine University Math Competition, Derek was 10th out of 107 in his division. The 11th-12th grade team of Troy Ricker, Logan Hardeman, Griffin Morman, Michael Fields, Makenna Ricker, Lindsey Sellman, Erin Eickholt, and Natalie Morman finished 2nd at the TSA-TEAMS contest at ONU in the small school division. The Ohio Mathematics League has wrapped up for 2016-2017 and Fort Jennings was 3rd in the region with the last contest still to be scored. Leading scorers for FJ were Griffin Morman and Trevor Neidert. Mr. Bosch took four juniors Marissa Krietemeyer, Makenna Ricker, Natalie Morgan and Adam Howbert to Ohio Northern University for the 14th annual ONU Math Shootout. These four students worked on math problems throughout the morning, then had a competition involving those same problems in the afternoon. Jennings placed 9th out of the 20 schools competing.
