From the President Hello everyone, the year is already moving so fast, I have officially falling behind on all my build projects. I have had multiple chances to fly in February, which is not all that common in past years. I have also enjoyed watching my 6 year old fly a top wing trainer plane achieving his first solo flight just last week. Sort of a proud moment for me, but this event has also really allowed me to reflect on the future of our hobby and club. Watching Kyle learn and grow has been really neat. Starting him on a simulator and watching him go through the stages of learning. The learning continues on with small indoor quadcopters where he learned more basics of flight. Then we got him the top wing trainer called the “Apprentice”. So after all the practice I asked the little man if he was ready to head out to the field for his first real flight. ”YEP” he says. So I say, “Ok Kyle, I will take off and land for you. I’ll be right here if you need any help.” He says, “Dad if you do help me don’t push too hard on my fingers because the top of the sticks are really sharp.” LOL “Ok buddy.” So flight # 1 I take off for him, hand him the controller and he flew perfectly no help needed. I never had to step in. Great job buddy!!!! Flight 2,3,4 all same thing. Two days later he says dad can we go to the field today it’s nice out and it’s time for me to take off and land all by myself. LOL Really Bud, you think you’re ready! “Yep”. We get out there. He’s standing on the edge of the runway. I point the plane where it needs to go and say you have to use a little rudder to steer it bud. “I KNOW DAD”. Perfect take off. He fly’s around and sticks the landing as well. Little sloppy on the approach had me worried. I thought he was going to put it in. Nope, he nails it. ONE PROUD DAD!!!! This hobby is about learning, growing, having fun and being together with people that can share our experiences. That’s the mind set and thought that will carry us into the future. Our USA4 STEM event will be jammed packed with youth kids being introduced to our hobby. And Toledo Weak Signals is hosting this event. We will have many youth activities available to introduce new families to our hobby. Two other Special events this year are the AMA Scale contest, and the AJ aircraft sponsored HUCK fest for AJ patrons!! These events are awesome stuff for our club. It’s time to pay some bills with other money than from the show! The 2nd meeting in March is an activity meeting and we will be hosting a static model show. Everyone bring out the models your proud of. The ones you want to show off. There will be fun judging and prizes. It will be worth your while to bring out your planes. Let’s try and make it an awesome fun event to mingle and talk about all our new stuff. Final note all. The ordered T-shirts will be at the next meeting. We will also be taking more orders for t-shirts if you weren’t at the last meeting. So bring your money to place your orders, $16 for S,M,L,XL, $17 for all sizes larger. We will continue to take orders for a while and we will also be selling shirts at the expo. You’re President Scott Bauerschmidt

Newer members, if you have not requested or been assigned to be on any other committee detail, you will be required to work on door security. Please let me know as soon as possible but no later than March 4, 2017. The earlier you notify me of your preferred dates and times, the better chance you have of getting your request. I would prefer if you would email your information. The information I need is all of the times that you are available to work and the times that you cannot work. Everyone will be working four shifts. If you have any special request or preference let me know and I will try to honor your request. If you do ask for a special request I will also need other options if I cannot fill your first preference. Also, let me know if want the same schedule that you had last year. Please realize I will do my best to give everyone the shifts they want but it is not always possible and I will try to come as close as I can, that is why I need the total times you are available to work. Please do not request all back to back shifts if possible. This makes it harder to accommodate other member’s requests. The following will be the 2017 shift schedule. It is the same as last year. 2017 THURSDAY EXPO EXHIBITOR SET UP It really saves the club money on hired door guards if club members volunteer for door security for the Thursday Exhibitor th Set Up. The date for the exhibitor set up is Thursday, April 6 . The set up time is from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The Friday, Saturday and Sunday door guards cannot shift to Thursday. There are not enough members working door security on Fri., Sat. and Sun. to allow any shifting to Thursday. What is needed are members willing to work extra on Thursday to save the club money so we do not need to have Rent-A-Guards. The hours worked on Thursday will not replace the hours you are needed at your regular weekend assignment. This door security is simpler than the weekend assignments since there are no tickets or hand stamps, only Exhibitors and club members. II have two shifts; 7:45 AM to 2:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 8:15 PM. There will be relief for lunch and breaks. Chairs will also be provided at each door. Thursday parking details will be available as they become available. Replacing the Rent-A-Guards will only work if we can have enough members to work all day. I will need members for both shifts or we will still need Rent-A-Guards, which defeats the purpose. If I can get 28 members to work on Thursday then there can be two guards at each door and the two guards can relieve each other as necessary. Volunteering for Thursday is open to all regular, associate, perspective and life members. Even if you have assignments for Friday, Saturday or Sunday you are still welcome to volunteer to work on Thursday. I will need to know if you can help on Thursday by March 4, 2017. This above-and-beyond volunteering for Thursdays has been greatly appreciated. One of the reasons we have such a wonderful Club and flying field is members like you. Thank you so much! Let's continue to work together to make this a great show! Mike Vorbau, Expo Security Chairman

Club History

R/C Homewreckers, Part 54

The year 1980 was a memorable one for the club. We had just finished celebrating our 25th Anniversary Conference year and the club was feeling pretty smug about things as everything was coming our way. We had the Midas touch and gold was everywhere. What could possibly go South on us when everything was coming up roses? How about a nice friendly little LAWSUIT? We were living the life of Riley to use up the last of all my rusty old clichés but things were not Rosie with our neighbors and all the flying outside our property boundaries finally caught up to us. The people living just south of us gave up the ghost and hired an attorney with the intention of having the courts order us to either stop altogether or at least stay where we belong. They didn’t like the noise and if a judge was to order us to cease and desist, it would be fine with them. So we received a summons delivered by a Deputy Sheriff dated Sep 5, 1980, all typed up nice and neat on legal paper (of course) signed by the county clerk and a judge in the Circuit Court in Monroe. The summons named our club “Defendant” and ordered us to appear in court on the 26th of September at 11am before Judge Weipert to show why the Plaintiff’s request for relief shouldn’t be granted. The Plaintiffs were shown as being represented by John Sullivan of Sullivan and Ready complaining that although we own property just to the north of the Plantiff’s, that we launch and fly model airplanes over the neighborhood and this activity occurs on any given day to the extent that Plaintiffs cannot carry on a conversation with others on their own property and disturbs the peace and quiet and the comfortable use of their own property. They indicated they had no confidence we would cease to a reasonable level on our own therefore were asking the court to permanently require the defendant, it’s members, guests, agents, servants, employees and any other person having knowledge of the order, to cease from operating radio control airplanes on the Defendant’s land. They also requested attorney’s fees and other costs which is pretty well normal in courts. So……..there we are. They didn’t request the court make us sit down and adopt a reasonable compromise. Uh-uh. It was shut down, no flying!! Period!! There were club members who will tell you they saw it coming and I’m sure one or two were now saying, “I told you so”. But the majority didn’t listen. They were too busy flying over other people’s property and we did. Guilty as charged Sir!! I can’t tell you how many times Rick and others visited these people in an effort to sooth feelings to no avail because as they were talking, others were fueling up their models and try as me might, we just couldn’t seem to stay North of that creek line no matter how much we tried. So we sat down with ourselves and talked. Cooler heads were important right now and we needed to start right at the top. We’re a Toledo club. Always have been that bunch from Toledo even though several members lived in Michigan, we

considered ourselves from Toledo, Don Belote was Co-Director, lives in Toledo, Bob Hisey is Co-Director, lives in Toledo. We used Don’s address as our official address which was his place of employment and where all our mail was sent since he was a postman and we used a box number at his branch. Made sense but now we have a small problem to start. Firstly, we’re going to court in Monroe. That’s Michigan. We need an attorney licensed to practice in Michigan! Plus, it would be nice if we had one that understands modeling. Save a ton of explanation when we’re in the consultation stage with him. Fortunately there is a guy. Belongs to the Signal Seekers and many of our people knew him or knew of him. His name was Don Unwin and we agreed we should contact him for advice so he was contacted and he agreed to meet with us. He indicated, to get the real feel for the situation, we should all meet at the club house and then he could see the layout of the houses in relation to our property, where we actually fly and so on, which he did. We had a super productive meeting with no other subjects and accomplished much. Don told us at the end of his visit that this is what he could visualize. Plantiff does not like us to start and would like to see us shut down permanently. So both Plantiff’s go visit a local attorney to see what recourse they have, if any, and attorney tells them…..”I can probably take care of this for you in court, why don’t you write me a check for a hundred bucks and I’ll go talk to my friend and fishing buddy Judge So-and-So and I’m sure he will sign a court order ending flying operations by those guys”. Or words to that effect. We’re ordered into a local circuit court where this attorney probably makes a large part of his living and Don was sure this attorney knew all the other lawyers and the judges and was probably on a first name relationship. Nothing offensive meant here, it’s just a way of life in small town courts. Same all over the country. So Don spoke with us and said, in order to succeed in this case as our representative, he felt the case should be moved to a different court and what he had in mind was Federal Court in downtown Detroit. The court process for this kind of move is called “Removal Jurisdiction” and the law allows a defendant to move a lawsuit filed in ‘state court’ to the ‘federal district court’ in which the ‘state court’ sits. Don felt he had many valid reasons and he questioned us again to make certain he was correct although being a modeler, he knew the answers. To start, for example, we are a dual state club meaning we have members who reside in both Ohio and Michigan. We call Ohio our headquarters yet our flying operations are in Michigan. We are required by our own rules to belong to an international organization (AMA) and we cannot fly unless we possess a federally issued license that allows us to operate our radios. (FCC) So for those reason, our hired representative, our attorney who we now had officially retained, felt our fate should be determined in Federal Court, not in a local possible unfriendly atmosphere. After this court move we’re now in the role of defending ourselves and for that purpose our representative Don again spoke to us and basically said…. “I need data”. How much noise do you make compared to Federal standards?? Bring me data of the actual sound intensity we produce with every type of model we fly at different locations around the area to determine our impact on the neighborhood. In particular…in front of Plantiff’s house! Fortunately for us, Ken Hulik a club member, was employed by General Motors Corporation and part of Kenny’s job was traveling to different GM facilities running tests on their efficiency in the medical area and this job gave Kenny access to many different types of test equipment including sound intensity dosimeter’s . He volunteered to borrow some of this equipment for our use and we set up a work party at the club field and spent a day gathering data!!! To be continued……………….Wayne

Club t-shirts are available for order. T-shirt prices will be $16 for club members, $17 for XXL and XXXL. Still working on the hats.
