NORTHWEST TEXAS COUNCIL Hello NWTC Scouters, You're invited to attend the Northwest Texas Council's Spring Cook-O-Ree, a low-key, but super fun weekend event at Camp Perkins, bringing all of the Council's Boy Scouts together. The weekend will offer cooking demonstrations, competitions, contests, a camp-wide feast, and campfire/awards ceremony. Don't miss the excitement, the fun, the fellowship, and the good food! General Information REGISTRATION:

Please register online, or ensure the attached unit registration form and appropriate fees are received in the Council Service Center by Monday, March 27th. The fee for the event is $15 per participant (youth and adult). The fee for late registration (those received between March 28th and April 3rd) is $20 per participant.

No registrations will be accepted after April 3rd CHECK-IN:

Check-in at Camp Perkins will be 5:00-8:00 pm, on Friday, April 7th. Check-in at the camp office. Have a unit adult present completed BSA medical forms Parts A&B (health history) for each participant. You will be given a unit information packet and assigned a campsite. Unit leaders and SPLs will meet for an informational briefing and cracker barrel at the dining hall at 9 p.m.

CHECK-OUT:

Campsites will be inspected before units are cleared to depart Sunday morning.

MEALS: Units should plan to prepare all meals for the weekend in their campsites. See details for Saturday evening meal under “Cook-o-ree Program.” CAMPFIRE: After dinner Saturday, staff will host a campfire and awards ceremony.

Units will be provided an opportunity to stage a song or skit to complement the weekend’s cooking theme. A volunteer SPL will emcee and help organize a slate of performances for the program. Wichita Lodge, Order of the Arrow, will stage a call-out ceremony for new OA candidates.

CHURCH SERVICE: An inter-faith worship service is scheduled for Sunday morning. A Scout is Reverent - we encourage all campers to participate.

Saturday Program MORNING PROGRAM – Event staff will offer several demonstration areas where Scouts can observe, learn, and participate in various aspects of outdoor cooking. Demonstration areas will be open throughout the morning, and participants are encouraged to spend time at the areas they find most interesting. Among the demonstration areas, Scouts will find the following:  Beginner Basics - New Scouts can learn menu planning, food preparation, food storage, dishwashing clean-up tips, stoves and stove safety, camp sanitation, and more.  Small Group Cooking - Get ideas and recipes for “one-pot” meals. Watch the preparation and tastetest soups, stews, goulash, casseroles...  Dutch Oven Cooking - We’ll cover Dutch oven basics, to include how to plan and prepare your Dutch oven main courses, desserts, and stuff you probably hadn’t thought about cooking in a Dutch oven!  Utensil-less Cooking - Learn how to cook without worrying about washing a ton of dishes!  Tin Foil Cookery - Learn some amazing ways to prepare your meals in foil (Aluminum Eggs or Hawaiian Delight) and then discard the "pots" when you’re done.  Novelty Cooking - Have you ever cooked bacon and eggs in a paper sack or boiled an egg in a paper cup? How about baking in a cardboard box? Well, this demonstration is the place to learn.  High Adventure Cooking - Learn the tricks of backcountry cooking as well as how to eat well without spending a fortune on those expensive pre-packaged freeze dried foods.

AFTERNOON PROGRAM – The afternoon will provide opportunities for a few Patrol competitions (with cooking and eating as the main theme, of course). Several events will be offered where Scouts’ cooking and related skills will be put to the test. Detailed information and instructions will be provided at the event -- we’re sure you’ll be prepared…

EVENING PROGRAM – Camp-wide Potluck Feast! PATROL COOKING – Patrols will prepare their favorite camp meal to share with the rest of camp. The dishes prepared should represent the Scouts’ best efforts. Patrols will bring their meals to a potluck feast at the pavilion where we'll sample each other’s dishes. Bring your own mess gear (plate/bowl, cup, utensils); water/sport drink will be provided. Be sure to bring copies of your recipes to share with other units! CHOPPED: Adult Leader Dessert Competition – Scoutmasters/other adults will prepare a dessert that incorporates mystery ingredients provided to them by camp staff. The ingredients provided will not be sufficient to prepare a dessert dish; rather, entrants will need to supplement the ingredients provided with other ingredients brought to or found in camp. Entries will be judged based on taste, presentation, originality, and the degree to which the supplied ingredients were incorporated into the dish. *When preparing potluck dishes & desserts follow these guidelines:  Be punctual when bringing your dishes to the pavilion  Prepare at least enough food to feed all the members of your patrol (or unit)  If you prepare a "one pot" meal, make sure it is a sufficient meal by itself  If you prepare an entrée, also prepare complementary side dishes  Bring any serving utensils required to serve your dish  Do not prepare any portion of the dish in advance; ingredients should be prepared completely in camp
