4/21

June 19-23, 2017 (9am-3pm) For students entering 4th - 8th grades in the fall of 2017.

Let Us Pray This June 19-23, Northland at Longwood will host Worship in the Arts Camp! This five-day camp provides an encouraging environment for spiritual growth with instruction in the disciplines of music, acting, dance, visual arts, and technical production. Instruction and mentoring are provided by professional artists within the Northland community working alongside our True North college interns. The goal of this camp is to encourage young artists to grow in their faith and to develop their God-given talents. We want to engage students in reflecting upon their own part in God’s story, and encourage them in an effective and authentic expression of worship. In keeping with Northland’s mission of equipping young artists for a lifetime of worship, the week will culminate in an evening of celebration for families in our community. This year’s program is Let Us Pray, a celebration of the Lord’s Prayer. Registration opens Tuesday, April 4 at 9:00am for new campers who are entering grades 4-8 in the fall of 2017. A link to registration will be available through the Northland website at http://calendar.northlandchurch.net/group/worship_in_the_arts. Be sure to register right away as space is limited and can reach capacity within the first two days. If you have questions, please contact Bethany at (407) 937-0541 or email [email protected].

At Worship in the Arts Camp, each student will enjoy one primary focus as well two electives in visual arts, music, acting, and/or dance.

Primary Focus Course Descriptions Primary Focus: Visual Arts Through studies in drawing, painting, and sculpture, students will discover how art can be viewed as worship by exploring various techniques and elements of art. They will be meeting specific design challenges while creating works centered on the Lord’s Prayer. These pieces will be displayed for viewing in the gallery presented following the musical performance Let Us Pray. Prerequisite: None Primary Focus: Singing Our primary goal is to challenge each vocalist to reach a more authentic level of communication and expression in song. In preparing songs for the musical performance Let Us Pray, vocal artists will work on improving skills in phrasing, pitch, rhythm, breathing, microphone technique, movement, and ensemble singing. Prerequisite: None Primary Focus: Dance A mix of styles will be acquired by study, according to each dancer’s training experience. With creative choreography, we will focus on improving and perfecting leaps, turns, and kicks. Our concentration will include lyrical, ballet, jazz, and more. Dance routines will be learned and then performed during the musical performance Let Us Pray. Groups will be formed according to age and training. Prerequisite: 1 year or more of dance training and Dance Focus placement class on May 20, 2017. Primary Focus: Technical Production (Students entering grades 7 & 8 ONLY.) Students will receive introductory training on state-of-the-art equipment. They will explore ways in which technical experts in audio, video, and lighting help provide and enhance environments for people to more fully engage in the worship experience.

Elective Course Descriptions VISUAL ARTS Drawing: A Study in Illustration (1pm or 2pm) While creating works of art using various techniques in drawing and illustration, student artists will pursue how art can be viewed as an act of worship. Specifically, students will consider the Lord’s Prayer while drawing through the design phase to a finished colored illustration. Each of these expressions will be displayed in the Young Artists’ Gallery following the musical performance Let Us Pray. Prerequisite: None Photography (1pm or 2pm) Student artists will create fun works that lead to discoveries of how art can be viewed as an act of worship. Various processes related to photography will be explored as students create original works that capture the theme. Some of the photography will be displayed in the Young Artists’ Gallery following the musical performance Let Us Pray. Required: Students are required to bring a camera or cell phone camera to camp Monday – Thursday. Prerequisite: None Sculpture (1pm or 2pm) While creating works of art using various techniques in sculpture, student artists will pursue how art can be viewed as an act of worship. Specifically, students will work to create representational forms depicting segments of the Lord’s Prayer. Their final projects will be displayed in the Young Artists’ Gallery following the musical performance Let Us Pray. Prerequisite: None

MUSIC Drums and Percussion (1pm or 2pm) Students discover the role of rhythm in music as they explore a mixture of percussion instruments as an expression of worship. They will provide these rhythm and percussion elements during the musical performance Let Us Pray. Song Writing (1pm or 2pm) To encourage growth and self-expression, students learn in terms of the predefined criteria that govern the qualities of good songwriting. Through various exercises, they will learn how to integrate these essential qualities into their work. Students will collaborate on composing one piece of original work during this workshop. Prerequisite: None

DANCE Choreography Workshop (2pm class) Choreography is something unique that is expressed differently by each person. Dancers will learn the basics of choreography for a variety of dance styles (ballet, jazz, lyrical, modern, etc.) and how to express their art through dance.
