I invite you to join me this summer to both learn about India, a country whose global importance is ever growing, and about how Sociology can be used to solve social problems in your own community. We will spend our time in the southern state of Tamil Nadu where I have done extensive fieldwork. Madurai, whose existence dates back to 3 B.C.E, will be our home for three weeks. Madurai is where the famed independence leader Mohandas Gandhi began his fight for justice. From our home at Lady Doak College, we will visit many locations that are working on a variety of local social problems – violence against women, economic poverty, social inequality and religious conflict. We will have the opportunity to interact with local professionals, academics and those being helped so that we can learn from them while thinking about how this information can be used in our own community! Southern India provides us a fantastic backdrop where we will witness the inevitable collisions between a historic India with its kinship-based, smallscale village-oriented culture, and the fast-paced world of global capital with its bureaucratic largescale social organization and a corporate culture. It is this side by side existence that will provide us the opportunity to really take advantage of sociology and its insights! This course, Social Problems, involves application of sociological principles and theoretical perspectives to major social problems in contemporary society such as inequality, crime and violence, religious differences, environmental issues, gender inequality, and family problems. The desire to address social ills has been at the heart of Sociology’s development. Rennison Lalgee Associate Professor, Sociology (512) 223.4044
