2017 NEFEC and ISRD School Counselors Forum On January 31, 2017, over 125 school counselors from around the Northeast Florida region gathered at the Best Western Gateway Grand in Gainesville for an event filled day of professional development. Dr. Scott Poland, a Professor at CPS and Co‐Director of the Suicide and Violence Prevention Office at Nova Southeastern University kicked off the day as the keynote speaker on Suicide Prevention/Intervention for Schools. Dr. Poland’s presentation recognized the need for schools to increase their suicide prevention efforts and be prepared to respond if a suicide occurs in order to reduce suicide contagion. This presentation helped school personnel increase their understanding of the incidence and most common factors in youth suicide and also come away with effective strategies for prevention and dealing with the aftermath of suicide. Helen Lancashire from the Florida Department of Education presented on Student Progression. This presentation was developed from input obtained from the school counselors prior to the forum. The session covered topics on statutes and rules that impact student progression and academic advisement. This year Elementary and Secondary Counselors had specific tracks for the afternoon sessions. Elementary Counselors attended a session on ADHD that was presented by Dr. Nik Rao and Dr. Anand Patel from the University of Florida and then a presentation on the Overview of the Multi‐Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) in Florida presented by Clark Dorman, University of South Florida. Secondary Counselors were excited to hear the latest updates from Vince Verges, FLDOE, on the new concordant and comparative scores for FSA, the assessment options under ESSA, fall retake reporting timelines, and key FSA spring testing and reporting dates. The secondary counselors then had a choice of one of three sessions: • College Culture Panel featuring Kellie Woodle, UNF; Megan Deputy, SJRSC; Saundra Henderson, SFC; Ali Hicks, FSCJ; and Michele Cuadras, FGC • MyDistrict Virtual School by Melissa Kowieski, NEFEC • FL CODE by Sherod Keen and Daniel Hornsby both of NEFEC. In collaboration with the Institute for Small and Rural Districts (ISRD), NEFEC was honored to offer this professional development to the school counselors.
