NRCSD ELEMENTARY SUMMER READING 2017
This year the theme for the Summer Reading Program is Build a Better World for students entering Grades 1-6. It correlates with the Summer Reading Program at the public library. The Summer Reading Program encourages students to read at least one book at his or her reading level. Of course, students are encouraged to read many books over the summer. Educators all agree that children of all ages need to read, be read to, and talk about books during the summer to maintain their reading level from the previous year. The students may use the suggested authors or topics to help them select books. All Summer Reading information can be found online on each school’s website and at www.northrockland.org under Parents/Students. By the first Friday in September, students will return their Summer Reading Logs (Public Library Reading Logs are acceptable) to their school to join the “Celebration of Reading.” All students who return their Reading Logs will receive a Summer Reading Certificate.

10 Ways to Pick a Good Book
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
8. 9.
Look at the title, as well as the cover of the book, to see if it interests you. Read the description of the book to see if it makes you want to read more. Read the first sentence, paragraph or page and ask yourself if you would like to read more. Do you enjoy reading a mystery, adventure, scary book, sports story, biography, etc? Choose a book from your favorite genre. Is there a series that you enjoy? Make sure you have read them all! Is there an author you enjoy? Try another one of his/her books. Try the Five Finger Test: a. Pick a page in the middle of the book and read. If you do not know a word, put a finger down. b. At the end of the page, if you end up with five fingers down, try another book. Ask your Teacher or Librarian for a Recommendation. Ask your friends if they have read any good books lately!
10. Have you seen a movie that you enjoyed? The book is usually better!
