BRECCIA Santa Clara Valley Gem and Mineral Society All American Club Volume 64 Number 1

Hello Fellow Rockhounds, Let me take this opportunity to thank you for electing me to lead the club for the next year. Please give some thought to who you would like to see lead the club going forward. This will be my third year in a row serving as your president and eighth over the last 10 years. I would also like to thank everyone that helped with the many things we did this past year. We have several exciting things to look forward to such as field trips, the festival, study groups, meeting new friends, and, most importantly, a chance to serve the club in many ways. I have already spoken with several of you and I thank you for stepping up to take charge of some of the committees. Many of the committees will have new leaders. If you have not volunteered for a committee position, please consider helping the club by accepting a position. Co-Chairmen are always welcome. Please reach out to me to let me know how you would like to help. I know

you don't like receiving calls begging you to hold a committee position almost as much as I dislike making them. If you have any ideas on how to improve the club or activities you are interested in, please write them down and give them to me or send me an Email: [email protected]. My phone number is listed here in the Breccia if you would rather call. The Installation Dinner was well attended and I think everyone enjoyed the evening. There were several bags of toys donated for Toys for Tots. The food was very good as usual. Many thanks to those of you that came early and helped set up the tables and chairs and decorate the room. It was nice to see all of you! I wish all of you a prosperous New Year.

DRC News

By Rick Kennedy

In the one dry hour that we were able to be open for

business during our October 30 rock sale, we made $543. Being an all outdoor sale, we quit, covered everything, and locked the gate when the rain came down too vigorously. The next day (no rain), several items were picked up for a total of an additional $270. Total $813.

Members are invited to bring items that they wish to display. See page 5 “Show and Tell” for more information.

Our next sale will be sometime this year (2017) We do not have enough material for a sale now, so we need more donations and no heavy rain. Typically, our sales are the Saturday or Sunday after the general meeting from 9am until noon. Sales are announced via email, in the Breccia, and at most recent general club meetings. If you are sorting through your own collection and wish to donate, let me know. We can provide official letters for your tax purposes since we are a non-profit organization. The sales are a lot of fun, you meet friendly Rockhounds, learn, and get good buys. All of the money goes to the club. What’s a Smithie? A person who uses metal to create jewelry; a metalsmith. Smithies make jewelry using a variety of metals and many tools and techniques. We work with copper, red brass (looks a lot like gold), and sterling. These are guided workshops, a perfect place for beginners to become comfortable with tools and techniques in a small, friendly atmosphere. Hard soldiering (using a mini-butane torch), jeweler’s saw, drill press, disc maker, dapping block, texture pliers and hammers, files, stakes, polishers.... all to the aim of a finished piece of jewelry. This year we are focusing on soldering, fold forming, creating bails and textures, and using the flex shaft,. Tools are supplied, but you are welcome to bring your own. If you would like to be on the Smithie email list, let me know via email. There is a small lab fee.

Thanks, Pat Speece

Festival Report PUT THE ANNUAL FESTIVAL ON YOUR CALENDARS The club’s annual gem and mineral festival is coming up fast. It’s on the weekend of March 18 and 19 at the Santa Clara County Fairground on Tully Rd in San Jose. Set up is on Friday, March 17. Put these dates on your calendar now! We need club members to start signing up now for Display Cases (see Stephen May), and for Competition (see Chuck Boblenz). Competition entries can be for either a single item or a case. The forms are in this month's Breccia. Please send them in as soon as possible. Let's show off what you create or collect. We need a club member to help make microphone announcements from the Hospitality Booth. A script and time table will be provided. Also, we need someone to work as dealer lunch courier. This job simply involves taking lunch orders from vendors using the menu of the building’s food service provider, and taking the food back to them. If you’d like to volunteer for either of these positions, contact Sonia Dyer at [email protected].

There will be job signup sheets available at the January and February club meetings. Please do your part to help with the club festival – it’s our major money-maker for the year. If there is a particular type of job you’d prefer to have, go ahead and sign up with Sonia now, to get first choice. This is your society. Your help is needed to keep it running smoothly. Please be generous with your time and efforts.

Show and Tell Members’ Display Schedule for Meetings this Year All members are asked to display at least one time per year., you can display as many times as you like. There are no displays in May and November because of the Silent Auctions. There are no displays in December because there is the installation dinner in lieu of our regular meeting. The display feature of our monthly meetings are enjoyed very much. . Don’t know what to display? Any type of rock, mineral, or fossil (identified or not), your latest project, information on a field trip to take, ideas for a display case, anything to do with rocks!!!

CRAFTS PERSON WANTED Are you an aspiring crafts person? Are you one that has that knack and can make things ? Now the main question: How about entering one of your specialties into competition. Individual items will be placed into a case and evaluated to American Federation rules. Thus, your entry starts with the highest number of points (100) and has points deducted for rule violations. When the judging is completed you have the best number available and will have recommendations to improve on the areas that were not up to standards. You can speak with the judge and obtain first hand assistance in preparation for your next time to compete.

Many people enjoy seeing what’s the highest score they can achieve in their specialty. Why not fill out an application today and come out and join us in the fun? See you there. Complete your entry form and get it to Chuck Boblenz as early as possible as we need to make arrangements for obtaining judges for the occasion.

ABLE BODIED PEOPLE, GRAB YOUR WRENCHES! Yes, that means you! Seven AM in the morning of March 17th your expertise is needed to help assemble and distribute show cases in to their places ready for use by our exhibitors. Last year our Festival had both men and women eagerly doing this task and had the cases assembled and in place before the building was available for the exhibitors. If you can join us for this effort it will be much appreciated and is one of the many things that make our Festival a noted one in Northern California. Take a look at what time you have available now and get ready to join us for this event.

The Arkansas Diamond Mine Jo Borucki In 1926, ten year old Alice Taylor was helping her father hoe cotton on a farm near Searcy, Arkansas. Alice found a beautiful pebble, picked it up, and kept it. She treasured her pebble, keeping it in a small leather pouch and still had it when she was a grown, married woman. She and her husband Pellie Howell had five children, and at one point one of the children took the pebble out onto the porch and lost it through a crack in the floor boards. Alice found it about a year later, in 1950 when she was gathering eggs, looking under the porch to see if a hen had been hiding a nest. She took it in to the house and accidently scratched the stove with her pebble. This made her curious. She asked Pellie to take it to town to the jewelry shop for identification. The jeweler said it was nothing but a stone. Alice was not satisfied so she wrote to the “Kansas City Star” asking their advice, and the paper staff replied saying that she should send it to the geology department at the University of Arkansas. The university staff told her it was a diamond and that she should send it to Tiffany’s for further evaluation. Tiffany offered her $8,500 for the 27.21 carat stone, and she accepted, using the money to pay off the mortgage on her parents’ farm and buying a home for herself. I love the story about Alice and her diamond because her diamond provided her parents and her family with more secure futures. While Alice’s diamond was not found at this site, but at Searcy 167 miles away, in analyzing the diamond, it proves to have come from this site, and it is thought that Indians living near the mine site had found it and used it for trading with other Indians. Later Howard Millar owned part of the land where Alice’s diamond originated and many other diamonds were found, and he had an idea. Instead of mining the land, he opened up the land to the public, charging them a fee for the privilege of looking for diamonds. He probably earned more money this way than he would have by mining for diamonds. His idea was adopted by the state of Arkansas, and the state bought the entire 887 acres for $750,000 opening it as a state park where for a nominal fee, people can search for diamonds and keep whatever they find. The diamond field attracts many visitors each year. Bill, our friend Gene, and I were among those hunting for diamonds in April, 2012. It had just rained and we were full of hope. Theoretically, the rain would wash the surface and make any diamonds more visible. We bought some Wellington type boots at Walmart and sloshed into the muck along with several hundred other people. Four people found diamonds on Monday. We were not among those lucky people. The next day, the muck had turned to a hard dry surface so we abandoned our boots and searched some more. Two people found diamonds but for us, no luck. On day three, we rented screens and dug a 4 foot deep hole and washed the dirt that we dug up in the washing tough called the Pigpen, aptly named with its slippery, gooey mud. We got lots of good exercise and had great fun talking to the loquacious Dan from Illinois who talked much more enthusiastically than he dug, but at the end of the day, Dan had no diamonds and neither did we, though three people found diamonds. After three days of sloshing, crawling, and digging, we had enough. We donated our boots to the local Goodwill and called it quits, but maybe we will have to try again someday. Who knows? We might be among the lucky ones next time.
