Program Itinerary
Program Itinerary
Dear Students, I invite you to join me this summer on an adventure that will change your life! This is the sentiment of several college students who have journeyed to Romania with me in the past few years. This trip to Romania will allow you to experience several aspects of European life – the cities, the countryside, and the breathtaking mountains! I have lived and taught in Romania for over three years and keep finding myself returning. Our course will focus on the psychological values and types of living experienced by Romanians. We will also strive to understand Romanians’ perspective and attitudes toward their largest minority group (Roma). Examining Romanians’ values will prompt us to look more closely at our own values and ways of living. Our journey will begin in Bucharest, a city that shines with the architecture and charm of any Western European capital yet also bears the scars of decades of rule by a communist regime. Then we will spend a couple of days experiencing traditional, peasant life in the countryside. In Sibiu, a Transylvanian city that was the cultural capital of Europe in 2006, we’ll better understand Romania’s place in Southeastern Europe and beyond. Outside of Sibiu, we’ll spend time in a Roma community learning about their attitudes toward education, parenting, intergroup relations, etc. The second half of the trip will be spent in the Retezat Mountains and the Jiu Valley. In the mountains, we’ll experience an adventure education program that works toward building trust amongst teens. In the valley, we’ll receive training on the method used by New Horizons Foundation in their efforts to create trust and increase community participation amongst Romanian teens. Then we will work with these teens on a service project of their choosing. Time on this Romania trip is spent in the homes of Romanian families, discussing with them your thoughts about life, love, country, friendship, etc. Romanians love to share their lives with us and they are incredibly interested in our way of life. And you will come to know your fellow student travelers well. Students who have taken these trips together started out as strangers, but ended up as friends who remained close and in touch.
