Gleanings from Paul’s Epistles “Portraits of the Risen Christ” Colossians 1:18 I. Introduction to Paul’s Letter to the Colossians A. The Ancient City of Colossae The city was filled with hoardes of people who espoused many different religions and philosophies.

B. The Church of Colossae The church was most likely founded by a believer named Epaphras, whom Paul mentions in this letter (1:7-8; 4:12-13). Several years after the church was founded a number of heresies had infiltrated the church. So Epaphras travels to see the apostle Paul, who was in prison in Rome. He begs Paul for his help in sorting all this out. Paul obliges.

C. The Letter to the Colossians • written around AD 60-62 as one of the prison epistles (along with Ephesians, Philippians and Philemon) • the companion epistle to Ephesians. • primarily written as a warning to the people as well as an appeal to focus our attention on the supremacy of Christ—the One who is to have first place in every area of our lives. Colossians 1:18 “ He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.”

II. My Message from a Portion of Colossians Song: “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.” Colossians 1:15-20 “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.”

Four Portraits of the Risen Christ (Colossians 1:18) Portrait #1: Christ: The Head of the Body, the Church “He is also head of the body, the church…” (Colossians 1:18) head = Greek: kephale = inspirer, ruler, guide, the power and mainspring of activity. Song: “The Church's one foundation is Jesus Christ, Her Lord. She is His new creation. By water and the Word.” Whereas, the Universe is the creation of Christ—created in Him, by Him and for Him, the Church is the new creation of Christ— created in Him, by Him and for Him! Ephesians 1:22-23 “And He (God the Father) put all things in subjection under His (Christ's) feet, and gave Him (Christ) as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.” Later in Ephesians 5:24 Paul will say in no uncertain terms: “...the church is subject to Christ...” (Ephesians 5:24) 1 Peter 5:2-3 “...shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God (who Peter later refers to as)...the Chief Shepherd.” Hebrews 13:17 “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account (i.e. to Christ, the Head of the Church). Our Common Confession: “Lord Jesus, You are the Christ: The Head of the Body, the Church; Lord Jesus, You are the Head of Campus Bible Church.”

Portrait #2: Christ: The Beginning

“He is the beginning...” (Colossians 1:18)

Christ is the source, the originator, the very power behind the entire universe. He's not just the beginning of all these things; He is also the end of all these things. He is the Alpha and the Omega; the beginning and the end Psalm 118: 24 “This is the day which the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Philippians 1:6 “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” Our Common Confession: “Lord Jesus, You are the Christ: the Beginning”

Portrait #3: Christ: The First-Born from the Dead “He is...the first-born from the dead…” (Colossians 1:18) Revelation 1:5) “Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the first born of the dead...” firstborn = Greek: prototokos = first in priority Jesus Christ was not the first human raised from the dead BUT He was the first in priority. Jesus Christ was the first born from the dead—the most important person ever raised from the dead (cf. 1 Corinthians 15). We live by resurrection FACT—not just as resurrection FAITH! 1 Corinthians 15:20 “But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep.” We sing with confidence: “Because He lives I can face tomorrow. Because He lives all fear is gone. Because I know who holds the future. Life is worth the living, just because He lives.” Our Common Confession: “Lord Jesus, You are the Christ: The First-Born from the dead.”

Portrait #4: Christ: The Pre-Eminent One “...so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.” (Colossians 1:18) In what area of your life do you have the most difficulty putting Christ first? It is a continual struggle for us humans to put Christ first in everything. It requires dying to self on a daily basis. “Lord Jesus, I want what You want. Your will. Nothing more. Nothing less. Nothing else.” Our Common Confession: “Lord Jesus. You are the Christ: The Pre-Eminent One.”

Concluding Challenge: Four Portraits of the Risen Christ (Colossians 1:18)

Discussion Questions 1. What are the evidences that your local church has Christ as its head? 2. Specifically, what is it in you that Christ began and you know He wants to finish? 3. What does the resurrection of Jesus Christ mean to you personally? Be specific. 4. In what area of your life do you have the most difficulty putting Christ first? What are some steps you can take to improve in that area?
