DECEMBER 2013

Your Christmas Newsletter from Mercian House Dental Practice Well it seems the holiday season is upon us again and here at Mercian House we are feeling rather festive. During the Christmas period we are offering discounted teeth whitening and a small gift to our patients who feel that their smile could do with sprucing up in time for the New Year. Please contact the practice for more information.

New To Our Practice As many of you may have already seen there are various changes happening at Mercian House. We have compiled a slideshow which plays on the waiting room TV. It displays information about us and the services we offer. There is also a useful section on preventative advice and our

recommendations of dental products currently available. It’s going down a real storm and many of our patients have commented on how useful they find the information. Another very exciting change is our practice makeover, the flooring has been changed along with new oak doors. The walls are soon to be painted. We would love to hear your feedback on the new décor! Our next new addition is in the form of Facebook and Twitter. We now have both pages up and running and regularly update them with information about what’s happening here at Mercian House. It is a great way for us to communicate with our patients and really build on our relationship with you all. So please stop by and even like or follow us.

The VELscope in use

Renovations: We have recently undergone some refurbishment: 1. Reception area

New waiting room chairs which are extra comfy. We’ll try not to keep you waiting too long for your appointment though!

Oral Cancer Screening Screening means testing people for early signs of cancer before they have any symptoms. At Mercian House Dental Practice we are at the forefront of dental technology and innovation. We have implemented a new screening device called VELscope that will assist us in the discovery of any abnormal tissue change. A suspicious area may be simply the result of biting your cheek or it may be indication of something more serious. Either way identifying the abnormality in the early stages is critical. VELscope uses a safe blue light to see areas beneath the surface in a totally new way that may have not been apparent with white light examination. We have the perfect opportunity as a dental professional and an ethical responsibility to you to examine your mouth thoroughly to identify any tissues that appear abnormal. We do not charge any extra fee for this service.

A new Patient Information TV. It plays a slideshow including useful dental information as well as our guide to dental products currently available. 2. Decontamination Room

Our central decontamination room was purpose built to the latest guidelines issued by the Department of Health. This room is where our dental nurses re-process dental instruments. You can be sure the instruments we use are 100% sterile.

Every cycle of use of our autoclaves is digitally logged for future reference. We also routinely audit our procedures to ensure standards are maintained.

In the News

Discreet aligners used to straighten teeth

recently... 1. Mouth Cancer Action Month. November has been ‘Mouth Cancer Action Month’ and like most dental practices we have been trying to do our bit selling badges, displaying promotional posters around the practice, as well as numerous tweets and facebook posts. 2. Brushing teeth could help prevent heart disease. Ensuring that gums are in good health can be directly linked to the prevention of heart disease. A new study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, revealed that athersclerosis, or narrowing of the arteries, can be slowed through regular brushing and flossing. 3. Survey highlights lack of awareness of mouth cancer causes. Few people are fully aware of the risk factors involved in mouth cancer, according to new research conducted on behalf of the British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF). None of the 2,000 respondents to the survey correctly identified all four major contributory factors to the disease. Could you? They include smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet and the human papillomavirus, which can be passed through oral sex. The latter cause has attracted widespread press attention since actor Michael Douglas told the Guardian that the virus had been responsible for his recent cancer diagnosis, though he later backtracked on this.

Coming Soon... Have you ever wanted straighter teeth? Are you put off by traditional metal braces? Mercian House Dental Practice will now be offering Invisalign clear aligners and Inman aligners to help you to have the straight teeth you’ve always wanted without the need for a traditional brace.

Invisalign Invisalign treatment consists of a series of nearly invisible, removable aligners that you change every two weeks for the next set of aligners. Each aligner is individually manufactured for your teeth, and your teeth only. As you replace each aligner, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week – until they have straightened to the final position prescribed by your dental practitioner. What’s more, a virtual 3D treatment plan (ClinCheck© treatment plan) shows the series of movements your teeth will go through over the course of the treatment. This allows you to see upfront what your teeth are expected to look like at the end of the treatment. From the results of the ClinCheck treatment plan, your custom-made, clear aligners are produced especially for you. If you're ready for a smile that transforms your appearance, Invisalign is your answer. Although there are many choices out there, no other treatment works as comfortably as Invisalign. For more information please visit www.invisalign.co.uk.

Inman The Inman Aligner is the perfect solution for crowding or protrusion of the front teeth. It is really fast, very safe and great value compared to other systems. With the patented Inman Aligner, your front teeth can be gently guided to an ideal position in a matter of weeks. Most cases complete in 6-16 weeks and because it's removable you can take it out to fit with your lifestyle. For more information please visit www.inmanaligner.com.

This gentleman was unhappy with the appearance of his teeth. After a course of teeth whitening we got to work on replacing old crowns and fillings with new ones and replaced his missing side teeth.

This young man was unhappy with the colour of his teeth and the broken incisor. Again after a course of teeth whitening he had an All Ceramic Crown (E-max) fitted as well as denture for his missing side teeth. This young girl was unhappy with an irregular sized incisor. A single Porcelain Veneer was all that was needed to make her smile more.

Cosmetic Treatment We are now seeing more and more patients requesting to have their smile improved. Enhancing your smile can make a massive difference to your selfconfidence. The common reasons people wish to improve their smile can range from prewedding preparations, to job interviews and even being teased by grandchildren! Treatment doesn’t have to be complex either. The girl in the photo’s above had just one single Porcelain Veneer. You can see for yourself how this has made her more confident in herself just by the way she now smiles. At Mercian House Dental Practice we have the latest in dental technology and use highly skilled techniques to achieve reproducible results time after time. As part of a cosmetic assessment we take a number of digital photographs using a high quality camera, lens and flash. These images form the basis for discussion and treatment planning.

To help identify and record the shade of your teeth we use a colour corrective device called Optilume Trueshade.

Optilume Trueshade is the only LED light for use with any restorative technique or material, that provides instant, correct and consistent daylight (5500K). The most popular cosmetic procedure we carry out is teeth whitening. How it works A carefully controlled concentration of bleach is applied to your teeth using specially made trays that fit your mouth. Your dentist will provide you with a bleaching kit and instructions. Every night, after brushing your teeth, you place the bleach gel inside the trays and wear them overnight. Every morning you will notice a lighter colour. What to expect You may experience some sensitivity for a short time during your treatment but this is normal and will soon fade away after completion. Selecting the right product for you Your dentist is trained to know what whitening products will be safe for your teeth and gums. Products provided by non-

dentists often do not have enough safety data and evidence to support their use; this can result in burned gums and/or blistered lips or even more serious consequences. Using products that are not appropriate for you will produce poor results. Whitening is Safe If carried out by a trained dental professional whitening is perfectly safe. Based on their knowledge of your oral health your dentist will discuss with you the options available, decide if whitening is appropriate for you and develop an overall treatment plan that gives the desired result. For more information or for a free assessment please call our reception team.

And finally……. As another year draws to an end we would like to take this time to thank all of our patients for your loyalty and support this past year. From everyone here at Mercian House we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
