On Friday 3 February, children enjoyed a day of Science Experiments. Pupils ran out of school eager to discuss what they had learnt that day. The school was buzzing with excitement and some wonderful learning opportunities. Thank you to Mr Smith for organising this fun day. The week before half term our children enjoyed Local History Week where each year group learnt about a different aspect of our school and Dorking’s history. Reception and Nursery looked at different artefacts from Dorking Museum as well as significant people the area have benefited from such as Thomas Cubitt and Ralf Vaughan Williams, Year 1 had visits from local residents and explored changes in toys, Year 2 looked at the changes to St John’s over the years and even took a visit to North Holmwood village hall where our school originated. Year 3 and 4 took a walk over to the Deep Dene Trail learning all about the changes to the estate and land, Year 5 took a walk into Dorking Town learning about Victorian Dorking and the significance of the Cockrell and finally, Year 6 walked over to Deep Dene linking the learning to WWII. The children ended the week with a presentation during celebration assembly where children spoke with confidence of the exciting learning opportunities and new knowledge gained. Each year group’s work is displayed in our KS2 hall so please take a look. This week, we have had a mobile classroom on the KS1 playground. Children have been learning about their bodies and with age appropriate material, understanding the effects of Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco has on our bodies. The children have all enjoyed these experiences; gaining some life skills. At the beginning of this week, we welcomed teachers from some neighbouring schools to observe the good practice from our teachers and understand some of the techniques used to increase progression. It is wonderful that other schools are using our school and staff to learn new ideas to develop their own schools. Shove Tuesday Next Tuesday is Shrove Tuesday. All children are invited to join Breakfast Club from 8am in making pancakes for breakfast. This special session will cost just £1.50 ( this includes existing Breakfast Club members). Booking is essential - forms are at the office. Looking forward to seeing you. Ash Wednesday At 09:30 on Wednesday 1 March, we will be holding a communion service to mark Ash Wednesday; the beginning of Lent. This will be led by both Rev. Stuart Tanswell and each year group. All parents and the community are welcome to join us. World Book Week Next week, we will be inspiring the children’s learning even further with a focus on books from around the world. The week will finish with a Mufti Day where children can come in dressed as their favourite book character. Many thanks, Mr Richards, Headteacher
