FOUR SCHOOLS Canaan Elementary School (PreK-4), Enfield Village School (PreK-4), Indian River School (5-8), Mascoma Valley Regional High School (9-12)

June 2017 Mascoma’s LifeSmarts team represented the state of NH at the national competition for the fourth year in a row. This year the competition was held in Pittsburgh, PA. LifeSmarts is sponsored by the National Consumer League and the program is oriented toward teaching high school students consumer literacy. Students compete in five categories: personal finance, consumer rights and responsibilities, technology, health and safety, and the environment. Each year the state champion team is invited to compete at the national level to determine the National LifeSmarts champion. This year Mascoma represented NH for the third year in a row at the national competition. The Mascoma team was competitive throughout the first seven competitive events and was finally knocked out during the sweet 16 elimination round. Pictured: Justin Andrew, Raymond Gonzalez, Nick Arnold, Ian Briand, Lukas Labrie The LifeSmarts team also competed in the JumpStart Coalition’s personal finance competition. Nine NH high schools qualified for the face to face competition at the Grappone Convention Center by taking an online qualifying test. The Mascoma team was successful in the competition until the semi-final round. After a tough competition the Mascoma team was eliminated by the team from Merrimack HS. Merrimack went on to win the entire competition for the second year in a row.

PRESCHOOL LEARNING WHILE HAVING FUN!! ~ CANAAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ~ Outside time is an important part of our preschool program. Our morning classes end the day on the playground and the afternoon classes start the day on the playground. This is a great time to move our bodies, build friendships, and take what we are learning in the classroom and apply it to our environment. (left) Preschool enrollment has increased again this year, and we were able to add another session to our program! We now offer a Monday, Wednesday, Friday morning and afternoon session for our 4 year old students and a Tuesday, Thursday morning and afternoon session for our 3 year old students. We have a very busy classroom! (right)

In preschool we borrow books from our school library to read in our classroom. We are learning how to listen to stories, take care of books, and get information from pictures. (left) Our alphabet bowling game, walking buckets, spinning seats, and hopscotch are some of the rug activities that give our preschoolers fun opportunities with gross motor development. (right)

~ ENFIELD VILLAGE SCHOOL ~ We have had a busy year in Preschool for both our 3 year old group and 4 year old group. Recently, we have been exploring all things related to Spring. We had tadpoles in our classroom for about 3 weeks. We brought them in as eggs and over our first weekend they hatched into freely swimming baby tadpoles. We watched them grow bigger and bigger over the few weeks we had them. One of our students’ families took them home to release them into their pond where they will grow into thriving adult frogs! We have completed a few fun science experiments with planting seeds in both 3 and 4 year old programs. We planted seeds around the classroom in different areas to experiment with the amount of sun, soil, and water they receive. Surprisingly, the seed that was tucked away in Mrs. Letson’s desk with no soil, only tissue paper and water, grew the tallest! We have also planted herbs in our window and have eagerly watched the stems shoot up and leaves grow! The 3 year old class created caterpillars out of beads on chenille stems. They each chose two colors and made a pattern using their beads. After their pattern was completed we glued on eyes and sat them on a leaf. The 4 year olds created caterpillars out of paper plates. They worked on their fine motor development by cutting along a curved line and then creating their own patterns along their caterpillar with paint stamps. Each student then cut out a circle, drew a face, and then glued them to their caterpillar! The 4 year olds also created beautiful butterflies by using markers and coffee filters! They drew designs on their filter, folded them, and placed them in water. Once dried they learned to fan fold their filters and add chenille stems as their body and antennas! It has been a great year and we are looking forward to another fun filled year next year with both our new and returning preschool students!

The Kindergarten classes loved the screech owl that visited from the Squam Lakes Science Center.

1st grade students planted tulip bulbs in the fall and were very excited as they watched them bloom this spring!

At the Cedar Circle Farm our 2nd grade students learned about agriculture and the life cycle of plants. 3rd grade students work on an online math and reading program on their Chromebooks in the library.

Our 4th graders learned all about churning butter and other aspects of early life in New Hampshire on their field trip to the Enfield Shaker Museum.

Governor Hassan took time out of her busy schedule to meet our fantastic CES 4th grade students.

Enfield Village School We are a community that values all children, recognizes their individual strengths and inspires them to learn and grow.

There are always exciting things going on at Enfield Village School. This year was the first for the New England Center for Children (NECC) Partner Classroom program. The Partner Program enables us to provide a level of service for children with autism similar to that found in out-of-district placements, while allowing students to be included in our community school. The NECC program has brought many smiles to our faces and that of the children’s parents. Shown here is a 1:1 paraeducator with her student of the day working on numbers.

EVS welcomed two storytellers to the school this year. Jools Skeet (left) is an oral storyteller, and she entertained groups of students in the library with her art form. Marty Kelley (right) is an author who shared his written stories with us and then returned to run workshops in each classroom. He is shown here autographing one of his books for a student.

Students learn the importance of our Federal holidays so that they do not think of them as just a day off from school. Veterans Day and Memorial Day ceremonies are led by students at the Enfield Veterans Memorial Park.

Students are shown working with the SmartBoard with Miss Phinney in 2nd grade. This spring marks the end of Miss Phinney’s 43rd year of teaching, 39 of those years at Enfield Village School! She will be missed as a teacher of multiple generations of Enfield residents, but definitely has earned the right to retire! Sharon, we will miss you!

Destination Imagination Once again our Mascoma Destination Imagination (DI) Team has done an outstanding job and placed second in the State. This means they have earned the right to participate in the DI Global Finals in Knoxville, TN. This is a WORLD competition with over 1,000 teams participating. Teams from over 10 countries, the Canadian Provinces as well as the United States participate. Our team did the problem Ready, Willing and Fable. They created and carried out a service project for the Humane Society using mainly recycled materials, then created a fable that explained their project in accordance with the DI rules for their problem. This is a remarkable team with a wonderful work ethic, our congratulations!

Mascoma High School Students – Montreal Trip

A definite highlight for French 3 curricular study of Francophone Canada took place on May 17-18 when the class traveled to Montreal, Canada for an intensive experiential cultural program. Students explored the Marché Jean Talon, and the Parc du Mont-Royal, before a long walk to the Old Port/ Vieux Montréal quarter. After a satisfying dinner in the Vieux Port, we attended a riveting performance of VOLTA by Le Cirque du Soleil. The show was truly phenomenal as well as heady and exciting from beginning to end! We are still discussing the storyline behind the extreme athletic feats. The next day we had a guided tour of the Marc Chagall retrospective exhibit at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Students witnessed his extensive genius in works of many media from typical paintings on canvas, walls (murals) and Paris Opera ceilings, stained-glass windows, ceramics and costumes for the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo. After another hour in the museum, students headed enthusiastically to the air-conditioned Underground Shopping Mall to find lunch and other souvenirs. The entire trip ran seamlessly and our kids spread MASCOMA pride from beginning to end!

IRS ATHLETICS – GO TIGERS! Indian River School field hockey, soccer, volleyball, football and cross country returned in 2016 with an experienced coaching staff and strong group of student athletes. All fall teams had strong competitive seasons under a coaching staff that returned everyone from the previous year. Steve Ladue and Steve Stebbins coached soccer, Rob Bennett and Julie Moulton coached field hockey, Bridget Labrie and Bobbi-Jo Weaver coached volleyball, Rick Currier and April Guinness coached cross country, and Josh Ruel and Bob Stone coached football. Something that stood out from the fall was the involvement from the high school programs, which included practicing/scrimmaging with our teams or letting us use the beautiful new gymnasium for volleyball matches. Thank you Mascoma High! Steve Stebbins returned to coach the boys’ A basketball team with the assistance of Todd Thompson. Josh Barker and Steve Ladue coached the B boys’ team. The girls’ teams had a new coach this year and who better than former alum, Kati Lary Jopek! The winter was filled with great improvement across all of the teams, with the boys’ A team winning all three tournaments they played in this year, setting up a bright future at the high school level. Coach Stebbins announced that this was his final year coaching the middle school team. We appreciate all he and Todd have given the program over the years! Steve Ladue returned to coach baseball with assistance from returning coach Josh Barker for another year. Jamie Hill returned to coach the girls softball team with assistance from Sue Miller. The consistency of the coaching showed as student athletes thrived during the final season of the year.

MASCOMA VALLEY REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS ~ PANTHER PRIDE!! The 2016-17 athletic year provided many exciting moments on the field and on the court. Individual achievements by some of our athletes, along with the debut of our newly renovated indoor facilities made for an impressive year. Teams that earned appearances in NHIAA post-season tournament play included soccer, field hockey and boys’ basketball. Significant individual achievements this year were earned by Sheldon Farnsworth who was selected to the New Hampshire Shrine Football Team, Tyler Bill who won Mascoma’s first-ever Division III weight division wrestling championship (bottom right) and Alex Schwarz who reached the thousand point mark in basketball (top left). Four seniors were honored by the NHIAA and the NH Athletic Directors Association as Scholar Athletes at an impressive ceremony at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord. Recipients were Evan Peck, Cameron Holmes, Amy Labrecque and Pashents White. (top right) The newly renovated gym, named after former coach and physical education teacher Ed Kehoe was dedicated during the basketball season and has received very positive reviews by both athletes and spectators.

In addition to the renovated gym, we are now utilizing the new weight room which has become a more integral part of the athletic program and a new trainer’s room. As the school year winds down, coaches are already planning on summer activities and preparing for the fall season.

THE MASCOMA ARTS Wishes for the New Year Ryan McKinley EVS Grade 4 Mrs. Nestor My wishes for the New Year to make changes in my life: to have nice teachers, to learn new sports and become a baseball legend greater than the Bambino. SAU 62 Standardized Testing Information

During the 2016-2017 school year, Mascoma students participated in three standardized testing programs:  Students in grades 3 through 8 took the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium Testing. This test (SBAC) is required by the Federal Government.  Students at the high school level took the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). This test replaced SBAC for high school students.  Students in grades 1-11 participated in the North West Educational Association (NWEA) computer based testing.
