Principal’s Message Mud Season is Thought Provoking
The month of March and the first few weeks of April are the most productive dates on the school schedule. No Holidays, no long weekends, and fewer distractions to the continuity of learning. Whether it’s the regularity of uninterrupted expectations, or a sense of accomplishment that comes with finished projects, Term III at NRHS often finds students performing at their best. At the end of the month, muddy March presents us with impassable roads, frost heaves, and time changes (Daylight Savings) that rob us of an hour. But in this “in-between time”, students seem to buckle down and make substantial progress. As we rest over the Winter Break, take some time to ask your teenager if they expect to accomplish their academic goals when they return. With determination, this is certainly the month to do so.

The tournament will begin on 2/24 with us receiving a bye. We will host a game on 2/26 and with a win, host again on 2/28, both games at 7pm. With a win in that game, we would move on to SNHU for the semifinals on 3/3 most likely against Gilford and hopefully, the Finals on 3/7. Karissa Bony, scored her 1,000th point in her career on 2/10. She is the 18th Newfound basketball player to do so, and the 11th female. The boys basketball team has been struggling as they are 0-15, but have been working hard and not quitting. Project Promise Profiles Ms. Ohl
Ms. Sara Ohl teaches familyand consumer science at NRHS, and also works in the afterschool program where she runs a Cooking Club and a Japanese Culture Club. Ms Ohl is one of those rare teachers who has a real connection with our students. Students would sign up to take her classes regardless of what the subject matter was because they just enjoy being with her. Her clubs are consistently among the most popular clubs when it comes to attendance. Ms. Ohl has often said “I just enjoy helping people, particularly students.” The Cooking Club is the foundation of our afterschool program. Not only do the students who attend the club learn valuable food preparation skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives but the meals they prepare are given to students who show up at the end of the session. In an area, where meals may not always be a regular occurrence, this provides a valuable and much needed facet of stability in some of our students’ lives. Ms. Ohl and her cooking class don’t just end their benevolence at the high school doors but often prepare meals for community events and fundraisers. Many times Ms. Ohl does this by donating her own time. Both of Ms Ohl’s clubs are informative and engaging. She prepares well organized and well planned lessons and the students are totally engaged. She mixes visuals, with guest speakers and has many hands on activities as well. Recently her club produced gingerbread houses for the holidays and she

Ms. Ohl with her students
had students enter a contest to see who could decorate their house in the most creative way. Many of her classes culminate in field trips that are relevant and expand on the curriculum experienced in the classroom. For example, her Japanese Culture Club will travel to an Anime convention in Boston which is tantamount to a Star Trek Convention to Japanese culturists. Many students attend Ms Ohl’s classes just for the atmosphere. It is easy to see why students go as she mixes a blend of food, music and socialization—all the things a high school student has an affinity for into a winning combination. She does it all with a smile, a positive demeanor and a caring but professional personality. It is no wonder that the students are drawn to her clubs and why she is the rock that we have built our afterschool program on at the high school. For her dedication to our program and her students Ms. Ohl has been nominated for the NHAN Excellence in Afterschool Award.
Project Promise has completed its second session and will start its final session after the winter vacation break. There are still two more outings of the Ski/Snowboard Club scheduled for March. Those who signed up have hit the jackpot when it comes to skiing conditions as it seems there is a fresh accumulation of snow every time the club heads for Gunstock. Our Holiday Crafts Club with Ms. Hutchins that had developed a loyal following has been reconfigured for the Spring session into a Fashion Crafts Club that will be offered on Mondays 3-4:30 in the Art room. Anyone interested in fashion should definitely check this out. There are plenty of activities being offered in the spring session so if you haven’t participated yet there is still time. There were plenty of winners in Project Promise’s second session. Our January Homework Club ice cream sundae winners were Rachel Ingham, Tiiersten Gosnell and Logan Frye. February winners were Rachel Ingham, Tiiersten Gosnell and Evan Meredith. The Superbowl contest winners were Nick Crosby, Mary Patten and Elizabeth Rowell. Level 3(McDonalds Gift Certificates) prize winners were Lauralye Waring,Aaron Normandin, Alisha Lowell, Phalen Leclerc and Tiiersten Gosnell. Level 2 prize winners(pocket radios) were Amber Powers, Kelsey Potter, Elizabeth Rowell and Aiza Danis. Grand prize winner (remote controlled aircraft) was Rachell Ingham.

Five Reasons to Donate Blood
Thursday, March 5 Noon - 5 pM At NRHS
1. The blood you donate gives someone another chance at life. One day that someone may be a close relative, a friend, a loved one—or even you. 2. Blood donation will cost you nothing but it will save a life! 3. If you’re a blood donor, you’re a hero to someone, somewhere. 4. Tears of a mother cannot save her child, but your blood can. 5. To the young and healthy it’s no loss. To the sick it’s hope of life.
Be a Hero!
