Parshas Tetzaveh
At the beginning of Parshas Tetzaveh, Hashem instructs Moshe to bring Aharon forward to be appointed as the Kohein Gadol, and to receive the eternal "crown of priesthood". The Medrash explains that when Hashem gave Moshe this instruction, He said, "I had the Torah and I gave it to you, for without the Torah, the world could not exist." The medrash compares this to a wise man who married someone, and was unable to bear children. After ten years, he asked his wife to find him another wife - he could have married someone else without her permission, but he wanted his first wife to retain a higher stature. This is what Hashem said to Moshe: I could have made your brother the Kohein Gadol without asking you, but it is My wish that you remain greater than him.
The Midrash Tanchuma says that when Hashem grants a particular status to an individual, it never leaves his family - Dovid Hamelech was granted royalty, and it will never leave his descendants. Aharon was the first Kohein Gadol, and the priesthood remains only in his family. We can understand the parable better using this second Medrash. Moshe received the Torah, yet it was not bestowed upon him alone to pass down the generations like Dovid and Aharon. Rav Shlomo Gantzfried זצ"ל explains why. Hashem intentionally gave the Torah to
the Jewish people in a way that it would not be merely bequeathed. Had Moshe Rabbeinu's descendants inherited his greatness from him, they would assume that the "crown of Torah" is passed on as an inheritance, like the royalty and priesthood. Subsequently, the people would no longer learn Torah - it would be enough for Moshe's descendants to continue that tradition. Rather, Hashem showed us that the Torah is freely available to any member of the Jewish people - anyone who desires to acquire it may come and do so. Why did Hashem do such a thing? The Torah is essential for the existence of the world - without Torah learning, the universe would cease to exist - unlike the other two crowns. Therefore, each person is required to exert effort in Torah learning to the best of their ability - for the upkeep of the world. We are tremendously fortunate that Hashem gave Moshe the gift of Torah and passed that gift on to the entire nation for eternity - rather than giving it as an inheritance that is bequeathed to one's heirs and remains within one family. Hashem's will is that everyone should learn and toil in Torah learning, for this upholds the entire creation. How fortunate are we that our portion was granted in Torah! May we all fulfil Hashem's will and learn Torah to the best of our abilities, and in this merit we hope that Hashem will bring Moshiach.
