Coupeville School District Policy No. 3100 Compulsory Attendance
10/16
Compulsory Attendance. Parents/guardians must cause any child ages eight to eighteen to attend school. The child has the responsibility to attend for the full time school is in session unless the child is enrolled in an approved private school, an educational center as provided in Chapter 28A.205 RCW, or is receiving home-based instruction. Optional Attendance. If the parent/guardian of any child six or seven years old chooses to enroll the child in school, then the parent/guardian must cause the child to attend school for the full time when such school is in session, unless the child is formally withdrawn from enrollment by the parents. Exception may be granted by the superintendent in the following circumstances: • The student is physically or mentally unable to attend school. • The student is attending a residential school operated by the Department of Social and Health Services. • The student’s parent/guardian has requested a temporary absence as described in district policy 3110. • The student is sixteen years of age, regularly and lawfully employed and either has parent/guardian permission or is emancipated pursuant to Chapter 13.64 RCW. • The student has met graduation requirements. • The student has earned a General Educational Development (GED) credential. Any law enforcement officer authorized to make arrests can take a truant child into custody without a warrant and must then deliver the child to the parent/guardian or to the school. Nonresident adult students or the parent/guardian of nonresident minor students may be required to execute an attendance and/or behavior agreement as a condition of enrollment, if the student’s previous history of attendance so warrants.
