APR IL ED ITION This left-hand column of the newsletter is where you will find our sponsors who have paid for advertising and help the Chamber cover the costs of mailing and maintaining our email account and website. To become a sponsor and have your information appear here each month or for certain months of the year, call the Chamber office. We thank all of our sponsors for their support of this newsletter.

Spring Cleaning Time! Shaking out the last of the cobwebs, sprucing up our surroundings, and many of us prepping for the ‘busy’ season. The extra hours of sunshine are always a help to me with that process -until they entice me outside for a walk, and then I have a hard time stopping. Your Chamber Board of Directors are doing some spring cleaning, too reviewing the budget with an extra meeting at the end of this month, and thinking about ways we can improve your ‘benefits’ package. We want your business to get a lot of bang for your buck, so we are looking at things perhaps we should ‘toss’ in order to be able to provide other services and wider exposures for you. If you have any interest in joining our marketing committee, please let the office know. Another enjoyable read this month - I really like Kaycee Looney’s encouraging words to other students, please be sure to pass this along to others after you read it. And remind folks that our scholarship application deadline this year is May 5th. As you’re hiring young folks for your summer jobs, let’s be sure to give them the customer service skills that will make them successful and help your business to prosper. Here are three of the most basic: 1- Always acknowledge a customer immediately; 2-Smile when you offer your assistance; 3- Say ‘Thank You’. If you have the opportunity to compliment someone’s work, please take a couple minutes to do so. Let management know when an employee is doing well. Positive reinforcement benefits everyone. I hear the robins calling me – wishing clean, happy trails to all…..

Kaycee Looney graduated from Craig High School in 1996. She was a recipient of a Chamber of Commerce Scholarship. The Chamber of Commerce awarded six scholarships in 1996: Jody Anderson and Mark Lund from Klawock and Stacy Kuntz, Kimberlie Killips, Kaycee Looney and Nate Church from Craig.

Education 

University of Alaska Southeast, Juneau – Associate of Arts, 1999

University of Washington – Bachelor of Arts, 2004

Kaycee participating in GISHWHES charity event. Task challenge: Do your best 1950's Donna Reed impression and vacuum the lawn.

After graduating from Craig High in 1996, Kaycee attended the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau to earn an Associate of Arts degree. During the winter semester of the 1998-1999 academic year, Kaycee became a foreign exchange student and studied at the University of Malta. During her travels, Kaycee achieved a childhood dream of seeing The Great Pyramids at Giza in Egypt. Kaycee took some time off from her studies and then enrolled at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, in 2001. She finished her Bachelor of Arts degree in 2004, majoring in Law, Societies, and Justice. In 2010, Kaycee began volunteering for Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA) and providing courtroom advocacy for children in the foster care system. This volunteer opportunity inspired her to attend law school. In 2011, Kaycee began studying at Gonzaga University School of Law in Spokane, Washington, where she focused her law studies on children’s rights and civil rights. Kaycee earned her Juris Doctor in 2014. She is a member in good standing of the Washington State Bar Association. Kaycee was hired as a Volunteer Supervisor with the Cowlitz County CASA program in Longview, Washington, in 2015. She provides supervision and support for CASA volunteers (like she herself once was) and also uses her law degree to better advocate for the children in Cowlitz County both in and out of the courtroom. In her free time, Kaycee continues to pursue her creative writing, something she has loved since high school. She has also participated in The Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World has Ever Seen (GISHWHES) for the past two years. GISHWHES is a week-long event benefiting various charities worldwide that promotes random acts of kindness, creating art, and general silliness. Kaycee would like to encourage any students reading this article to never give up on finding the things in life that inspire them. Life does not always lead us where we expected to go, but the path we walk teaches us much about ourselves and what we can achieve. Kaycee would like to thank the Prince of Wales Chamber of Commerce for the opportunity to share her journey so far with you. She would not have been able to begin down this path without the scholarship she was awarded and the amazing support of the POW community. 6

First of all, we want to give a shout out to Jeannie McFarland for her involvement with the Island Guide for 9 years of service to the Chamber of Commerce. Thank you Jeannie for taking on this huge responsibility!!! We are thankful that you will still be available for those tough questions that we will face as we tackle the 2018 Island Visitor Guide. As a new committee, we’ve decided to organize photos for this year’s Guide. One of the ways that we have decided that, is to create a bi-monthly photo competition starting May-October. Now is the time to take a look at what you shot in 2016/17. We have a waiver for photographers to sign stating that the Chamber will use their photos for Chamber promotion only. 

Editor's Correction In the POWCAC meeting report dated Feb, 2017: Kasaan was reported as presenting their wishes for an IFA stop in Kasaan, when in fact it should have read: Kasaan stated their need for an IFA stop on its way to/from Ketchikan to pick up passengers. The reply was: much study needs to happen before this can be brought to the IFA for further consideration. Prince of Wales Chamber apologizes for any inconvenience that has occurred due to this report. 8

The University of Alaska Fairbanks and the University of the Arctic are pleased to announce *The Arctic Broadband Forum 2017* which will be held in Fairbanks, Alaska, USA, May 8-9, 2017 The Arctic Broadband Forum will bring together educators, researchers, and industry from across the world to discuss the challenges, successes, and potential of telecommunications and broadband deployment in the Arctic. Specific emphasis will be placed on the role of broadband and digital technologies on the cultural preservation and self-determination of indigenous populations throughout the Arctic. A wide-range of presenters from across the Arctic, including Canada, Finland, and the U.S will provide presentations and lead discussion on topics relating to broadband. The sessions are as diverse as the Arctic itself and run the gamut from how broadband is changing lives in the Arctic to the challenges of implementing telehealth in northern Canada to public-private partnerships to the continued role of satellite technology in the Arctic. The Forum will also feature several panel discussions: How Broadband is Changing Lives in the Arctic, Indigenous Perspectives and The Government’s Role in Broadband Development in the Arctic. We are still confirming panel membership, but attendees won’t be disappointed. The Forum will also highlight several businesses throughout the Arctic that have risen to the challenge of delivering Broadband in such a remote isolated region. A keynote of interest is Elizabeth Pierce, CEO of Quintillion, the Alaska-based company leading the London to Tokyo fiber project through the Northwest Passage. Due to generous sponsorships, registration is only $50.00 and includes 2 Days of sessions, all forum materials, continental breakfast and lunch both days. Don't wait, register today. 25 YEARS EXPERIENCE

Men and women sometimes begin using drugs or alcohol to numb the pain of abuse, but other times, men and women begin using because it is forced upon them by their abusers. This is just another way that an abuser gains power over a victim. Sometimes abusers may even prostitute victims out in exchange for drugs. “One study shows that 42 percent of domestic violence survivors were using drugs or alcohol at the time they were assaulted, and a survey on DomesticShelters.org found that 42% of survivors had substance use forced upon them or they used substances to cope with the abuse. Similarly, research shows that one fourth to one half of men who commit acts of domestic violence also have substance abuse problems.” Victims of abuse who are addicted to drugs may not report their circumstances to law enforcement for fear that they will not be believed; that their children will be removed; and that they will be punished along with the abuser. Do not assume that a victim chooses the life he/she currently lives. There is usually more to the story. If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship and needs support, please call HOPE at 907-826-4673 to speak to an advocate or drop by the HOPE office at 404 Spruce Street behind POWER in Craig.

News from the Prince of Wales Runners/Walkers Club Shamrock Shuffle Surely a Success: On Saturday, March 11, participants of various species, ages and abilities assembled at the Voyageur in Craig on a clear, beautiful morning to celebrate and move the green on down the road for the Shamrock Shuffle Fun Run/Walk. Participants included those in strollers, family units, young adults, school-age students, middle-age folks and those carrying a senior citizen card as well as canines of all age groups, including one to-die-for-cute puppy that was carried on the route. Two chickens - which were shooed off - even tried to join in the affair. The true Prince of Wales Island spirit was evident that morning. The Prince of Wales Runners/Walkers Club would like to acknowledge and thank the 40+ participants, the enthusiastic canines and their supporting partners. Gail Slentz, owner of the Voyageur, donated the Voyageur as staging headquarters and also baked some yummy miniature muffins. Kim Scheidecker, owner of the Camo Shop, concocted her famous green punch for the event. Also Shirley Harris and John Smith provided the grunt work in setting up the course.
