CORPUS CHRISTI CATHOLIC CHURCH!

! "Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but !their eyes were prevented from recognizing him." Can you !imagine this scene? Jesus comes up next to these two !disciples, walks with them, talks with them, even goes so !far as to explain the Scriptures about him to them, and they !still fail to notice who he is. Understandably, they were sad, !"looking downcast" because of Christ's death. Maybe their !eyes glumly watched their feet as they trod along instead of taking in the sights around them. But at some point they !must have looked at their companion's face. Why didn't !they recognize Jesus until "he took bread, said the blessing, !broke it, and gave it to them"? ! ! In everything else during their encounter, Jesus had !appeared to be just another man. But when he broke the !bread, in fact celebrating the Eucharist, they realized who !he was. And then, he "vanished from their sight." Could it !be that the risen Lord wanted to teach his followers about the new way in which he was present? He may have !vanished from sight, but he did not leave them. He was !there, as we Catholics profess, through his real presence in !the Eucharist. ! ! We are not so different from the disciples on the road to Emmaus. We may at times become downcast, wishing ! !that Jesus was with us in a more obvious, traditional way. !But in fact, the risen Lord comes to join us every time we !go to Mass, remaining with us through his presence in the Eucharist. We only need the eyes of faith to believe that it's !true. This is not the same as physical sight, to be sure. But !he is there. As Jesus himself said in last Sunday's Gospel, !"Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed" !(John 20:29). ! STEWARDSHIP: A WAY OF LIFE ! Parish Financial Support April 26-27, 2014 ! ! ! ! !! ! !! ! First Reading:! Acts of the Apostles 2:14, 22-23 (46A)! ! Second Reading:! 1 Peter 1:17-21! ! Gospel Reading:! Luke 24:13-35 ! Today in the Gospel, we hear the story of two disciples on the ! road to Emmaus, “conversing and debating.” When Jesus began ! walking with them, they didn’t even recognize him. He asked ! them “What are you discussing as you walk along?” They told him all the things that had been happening in Jerusalem with ! great disappointment in the crucifixion. They asked Jesus to stay ! with them for the night and He did –showing them the mystery ! of His Resurrection through the Breaking of the Bread. We, too, ! must grasp this mystery and seek eternal life by truthfully and ! devotedly participating in God’s Word and Eucharist. We must do good works that give witness to our coming to belief, faith, ! and trust in God’s power to stay with us and save us. Our daily ! reaching out to others is our daily walk with the Risen Jesus. ! ! Adult: Do you recognize Jesus in the need and dignity of others? Or, do you find yourself “conversing and debating”? ! ! More info: Deb Blinstrub, 487-0235 or [email protected].

The Diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting is accepting applications for the St. George Trek, a high adventure Catholic leadership program for older Catholic Boy Scouts and Venture Crew members at Philmont Scout Ranch. The programs brings Catholic high school youth from around the country together with selected priests, religious, and seminarians for eleven days of backpacking in the context of a vocation retreat.

Baby Shower for Birthright will be held on May 4 during and after the Masses and in conjunction with the May Crowning of Mary. We will need volunteers for decorating, baking muffins, etc.

The 2015 St. George Trek begins on Wednesday, July 8 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Then it’s off to Philmont Scout Range to hike the Sangre de Cristo Range of the Rockies. While hiking, they will experience a program that is designed to encourage the integration of morality, values, spirituality, faith, scripture, and vocation in their lives as young Catholic men and women. Before returning home on Thursday, July 23, they will be asked to commit their own continued discernment as well as bringing their experiences home to their respective dioceses, so they can become effective peer leaders and role models for their fellow scouts.

Nursing Home Visits will take place one Sunday afternoon of each month at a local nursing home. Youth will help with activities and provide some music. Contact Karen if you’re interested. !

2014 BISHOP’S APPEAL!

BIRTHRIGHT OF BALLSTON SPA!

Next weekend (May 10-11) is the 2014 Bishop’s Appeal Commitment Sunday. (Due to the circumstances of last weekend’s Masses, the Commitment Sunday was rescheduled from this weekend as originally announced. Thank you for your understanding) This Appeal supports all of the vital ministries and programs throughout the Diocese of Albany. It is our one opportunity during the year to reach out in support of all of the people of God beyond the boundary of our own parish, Corpus Christi.

Birthright of Ballston Spa will be offering fresh carnations for a $1 donation after all masses on May 10 & 11 in celebration of Mother’s Day. Proceeds from this sale will benefit women who need support through a crisis pregnancy. Your continued support of this fundraiser is truly appreciated.

Please respond to the Bishop’s Appeal by making a pledge that you can pay throughout the year. Your gift directly helps our parish to pay its share of the important work of the diocese. Let us strive for 100% participation: not equal gifts, but equal sacrifice! Online giving to the Bishop’s Appeal is now available at www.thebishopsappeal.org. Donors can make a single one-time gift, pledge or a payment on an existing pledge. Additional information on the Bishop’s Appeal, in general, can be found on the Albany Diocese website at www.rcda.org. Click on the Site Map link at the top. A link to the Bishop’s Appeal can be found under the Home heading on the Site Map page. Once you’re on the Bishop’s Appeal page if you click on Where Your Dollars Go you will see some familiar faces!

LOST & FOUND! Please note – There is now one centralized Lost & Found area located across from the restrooms in the Parish Hall. There is a box for items and hangers for clothing. Valuable items such as car keys and jewelry will be kept in the Parish Secretary’s office where they can be claimed during office hours. The Parish Hall is open during office hours and during weekend Mass times. Thank you.

Host a Student From Spain in July! The Student Travel Exchange Program (STEP) is seeking wonderful host families in our surrounding area New York for 25 students from the Northern Region of Spain. The students, ranging in age from 14-17, will live with your family from July 1-25, learning about American culture, enhancing their English language skills, participating in group trips to Boston, 6 Flags, Fun Spot, 3 days/2 nights in New York City, and enjoying our lakes region summer life…The students have studied English for several years, and are anxious to meet new American friends. In an-ever shrinking world, this is a great opportunity to establish global friendships, many of which last a lifetime. Please act quickly, as we expect many families to be excited about this opportunity. Interested families should call or e-mail Kim White@ 518-3651834 or [email protected]. Share Your America, and make a new friend this summer!

JOAN NICOLE PRINCE HOME! The Joan Nicole Prince Home is a 2-bed comfort for the dying. Individuals live in peace, comfort and dignity at the end of life. Staff and volunteers serve as “surrogate” family members. We are offering training to the community for those who struggle with hands on care.

St. Paul told the Ephesians (Ephesians 4:22-24) – “Put off your old nature which belongs to your former manner of life…, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new nature, created after the likeness of God.” We reconciled through our Lenten journey and we renewed our baptism in the Resurrection. Now, it is time to ask God to send us His Holy Spirit to transform our mind, body and spirit. It is time to clear off the “rust” – the ways we have adopted that are offensive to God. Our challenge is to keep all of our strong points and allow God to transform all of our weak points. We need to see Jesus more clearly and be transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit. In “New Heart, New Mind – Renewing Our Minds by the Power of the Spirit,” there are a few first steps to cleaning our “rust.” Here they are with some Bible references. Your homework is to start scraping your “rust” so we can continue our steps to transformation next week: “As the Holy Spirit moves in us, we will develop a new perspective” (Romans 12:2); “God Wants to Renew Our Lives [by learning to live in the Spirit]” (Romans 8:9, 1 Peter 4:6, Luke 15:11-32); “Our Relationship with Jesus” – “Growing in our relationship with Jesus is a two-step process. On God’s side, the Holy Spirit is working each day to teach and transform us. On our side, we have the ability to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to the Spirit. When we say ‘no,’ we are telling God that we can handle our lives better on our own. When we say ‘yes’ and yield to the Holy Spirit, we are telling God that we need and want his help….” Come Holy Spirit, Come! Judy Mullins, Prayer and Worship !
