THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE HIRING A PLUMBER OR ELECTRICIAN
1. Are they licensed? This is one of the most important questions one should ask when hiring. Not all plumbers and electricians are licensed. Those that are must pass an exam that tests their understanding of theory, as well as local and state codes. Hiring a contractor with a license also provides a safety net should a job fail to pass inspection, since they are certified, bonded and insured. Licensees and their discipline records are available on DORA’s website. Check to see if any formal complaints have been filed and gauge your own comfort level on whether to employ someone based on that research.
2. Who’s doing the work? Large companies often employ more than one plumber and/or electrician, and may use a team of laborers for large projects. Always ask the professional providing the quote whether he/she is doing the work. If not, ask who will be completing the job, and find out their experience and qualifications. To avoid being a victim of fraud, be sure to check registration even if a contractor says they are approved. Recent, verifiable references are a solid means to check reliability, timeliness and thoroughness based on previous work. A professional working on a typical residential job should carry liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage for the entire crew.
3. What’s the cost of doing business? Cheaper isn’t always better. Finding a professional who will work effectively, safety and in a code-compliant fashion is paramount at a reasonable price. Find out whether the licensed electrician/plumber will be doing the hands-on work. If it’s an apprentice, make sure the licensed professional supervises his staffer to ensure the job is done right, the first time.
4. Are they experienced? Many homeowners make the mistake of hiring a plumber or electrician only on the basis of the license without realizing that the kind of experience he or she holds matters greatly. An inexperienced plumber may not have the necessary skills to complete your job safely and effectively. Experienced hands may cost more but could be faster and more thorough.
5. Do they have what you need? Before hiring a contractor, make sure most of the parts necessary to complete your job are stocked on their truck/van. If not, it could necessitate several trips to a supplier. The consumer should confirm who pays for the parts during those times.
