Summer reading is a great way to keep your mind sharp over the summer. Challenge yourself to read and read often! Read God’s word, read fiction, read non-fiction, read to learn and be inspired! Aim for 30 minutes of focused summer reading each day. Use the reading log to keep list of titles and authors for AR. You can also earn fun rewards! Houston Public Library, Half Price Books, and Barnes and Noble all have summer reading rewards. Share your favorite titles with friends and family! You first goal for summer reading is to read for enjoyment. Start your summer with a trip to the library and make sure to pick at least one book that you really want to read. Your second goal is to read our official summer reading book. You will need to take an AR test over your book, due by the first week of school. We will discuss and do a group project on the book when we come back to school. Reading with an audiobook and/or keeping a list of main characters and main events per chapter can help struggling readers. Make sure you read your book close enough to August to remember the details, but finish by the start of school! 5th Grade:

In Middle School, the AR plan will work a little differently than it did in the Lower School. We will have a requirement of 10 AR points per quarter, and points will be due by the beginning of each quarter (the end of the first 3 weeks). So students need to read at least 10 AR points this summer. Books read during the 1st quarter will count towards the 2nd quarter’s points, and so on. Any points earned past the required 10 will carry over into the next quarter. Let’s see who can go way beyond that and earn 100 points this year! That will also earn a special certificate from Mrs. Tillman and Mrs. Arrazolo. AR tests will start counting for the fall as of June 1. Students may come up to school between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., M-Th during the summer (call ahead to make sure), or they may wait and take tests the week we come back. Students, you are on your honor not to discuss AR test questions with any other student, of any grade level, from our school or another. Parents, we ask that you avoid the office computer area while AR tests are being taken. Keep in mind as you select books that students’ average reading level should stay at one grade level below and above. (7th and 8th grades have a little more flexibility, as their levels are harder to find.) Use arbookfind.com to check reading levels of a book and to make sure it is in the AR system. An occasional lower-level book is not a problem. However, students with reading levels below their required average will not receive full credit. Required AR reading levels by grade (See above for clarification): •
5th grade: 4.0 and up
•
6th grade: 5.0 and up
•
7th grade: 5.5 and up
•
8th grade: 6.0 and up
