BIOGRAPHIES |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| Grace Eunhye Choi earned her BM in piano performance at Hanyang University in Seoul, Korea and received a full scholarship to continue her piano studies at New England Conservatory in Boston, where she studied with Gabriel Chodos and earned her MM in piano performance. She completed her DMA in piano performance at the University of Minnesota with Distinguished McKnight Professor Lydia Artymiw as a recipient of the Ude (full scholarship) and Centennial Fellowships. Choi has performed solo and chamber rectials at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City, Jordan Hall and Williams Hall in Boston, Ted Mann Concert Hall, Lloyd Ultan Recital Hall, and Mairs Concert Hall in Minneapolis/St. Paul, and Music Mansion Hall in Providence. She has also appeared in solo recitals at Tongyeong Art Hall in Tongyeong International Music Festival in Korea and was featured on a live broadcast of Minnesota Public Radio where her performance was heard throughout the state of Minnesota. Choi is currently a professor of piano at North Hennepin Community College. A native of Wisconsin, pianist Joseph Hauer is artistic director of the Fox River Chamber Fest. He is also piano faculty at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and Artist-in-Residence at the Apollo Music Festival. This August, he will join the Windsong Chamber Players of Lake Luzerne, NY, for their first season of chamber music concerts. Hauer has performed at venues and series across the country, including the Kennedy Center, Avram Theater, Young Masters Recital Series (New York), Greaves Concert Hall (Northern Kentucky University), Britton 8

Recital Hall (Ann Arbor), Overture Hall (Madison), the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center (Appleton), Sitka Performing Arts Center, and Richard H. Allen Memorial Hall (Odess Theater, Sitka). He has soloed with the Madison Symphony Orchestra, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, Fox Valley Symphony, and Oberlin Orchestra. Hauer served on the adjunct faculty at NYU Steinhardt, where he also completed a master’s degree in piano performance with Eteri Andjaparidze. Also an avid collaborator, he was a piano accompanist at NYU Steinhardt, Brooklyn College, and the Lucy Moses School, and spent the summer of 2016 as piano accompanist assistant at the Sitka Fine Arts Camp. When he is not engaged in classical music, he enjoys biking and improvising jazz. Passion and purity of sound have brought violinist Paul Hauer solo appearances in the countries of Germany, Greece, France, the Czech Republic, and the Philippines. Chamber music and orchestral concerts have brought him to Italy, Singapore, Mexico, and China. While finishing his studies at the Jacobs School of Music, Hauer was guest concertmaster of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic for an all-Mozart program. Later that year, he performed the Sibelius Violin Concerto with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, and participated in a masterclass with Leonidas Kavakos in Athens. Hauer joined the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in the fall of 2016. Kevin Hobbs is currently on the faculty of North Hennepin Community College and Mount Calvary Academy of Music. He has also previously served on the fac-

ulties of Gustavus Adolphus College and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Hobbs earned his BM and MM from the University of Cincinnati, where he studied with Elisabeth Pridonoff and was the recipient of the CCM Honors Scholarship, the Reeves, Shockett, and McElroy prizes, and the first William Black Memorial Prize. He earned his DMA from the University of Minnesota as a student of Lydia Artymiw, and he also holds a BA (Writing) from Johns Hopkins University. His awards include top prizes in the Venetia Hall Piano Competition, the Wyoming Music Club Competition, the Brevard Festival Piano Competition, and the International Young Artists Piano Competition. He has performed at the US State Department in Washington, DC as well as internationally in Barcelona, Spain, and the Amalfi Coast in Italy. His students have won top prizes in the Schubert Club, Thursday Musical, YPSCA, and LaCrosse Symphony Rising Stars piano competitions and have been accepted to music programs at the U of M, the University of Wisconsin, Northwestern, Berklee School of Music, and the University of Cincinnati, CCM. Jayoung Hong has performed around the world as a soloist and a collaborative pianist. Recent solo recital appearances have included Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York Young Artists Showcase presented by New York Concert Artists, Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, Pretoria City Hall in South Africa, Taipei National Hall in Taiwan, Kulturhaus Konzertsall in Berlin, “Mayfest” in Manitoba, New Caledonia festival in Noumea, and St. James’s Piccadilly Recital Series in

London. She performs at the Carnegie Hall Festival annually and has performed throughout the US, Europe, and Asia at many events including Salzburg Dom Festival (Austria), Busan Maru International Festival (Korea), Heyri Art Valley Festival (Korea), Aspen Festival, Brandon University Clarinet Festival (Canada), and International Tuba Euphonium Conference. Dr. Hong is member of the piano faculty at the University of Nebraska. She holds a DMA in piano performance and pedagogy from the University of Kansas. Canadian pianist Jinsung Kim began his piano studies at age nine. Formerly a scholarship student of Dr. Lawrence Jones in the Eckhardt-Grammate Conservatory of Music in Brandon, he recently completed his graduate studies (MM) with Dr. Kyung Kim at Brandon University, where he received the President’s scholarship (full tuition) for outstanding performance and potential, and a full graduate assistantship. A recipient of numerous awards, he most recently won the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg Scholarship Competition. Kim has also won the Western Financial Group Insurance Tudor Bowl, and the Kaye and G.R. Rowe scholarship at the Brandon Festival of the Arts, where he was twice named top performer at the BFA’s 2012 and 2013 Encore concerts. He is a prize winner of the National Music Festival Competition and National Finals of the Canadian Music Competition. He received the best performance award from the AMAF provincial festival and won first place in the Young Artist Series 9

As a result of this award he completed a highly successful recital tour of Western Canada in 2012–2013. Kim continues his graduate studies with Dr. Kyung Kim at the University of Minnesota where he holds the Berneking Fellowship as a doctoral student. Director of the Kim International Piano Camp, pianist Kyung Kim has performed widely to critical acclaim in concerto, recital, and chamber music performances throughout Asia, North America, and Europe. Recent performances have included the Winnipeg, Madison, Milwaukee, Lawrence University, and University of Minnesota Symphony Orchestras; chamber music performances for the Niagara (Canada), Heifetz, Bartok, and Salzburg Mozarteum summer music festivals, and the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota, and the Colonial Chamber Series; and repeated solo recital invitations for Wisconsin Public Television, Chicago’s Live from WFMT, Wisconsin Public Radio’s Live from the Chazen, Brandon University pro series, and the University of Winnipeg Virtuosi Series. As an avid chamber musician, Dr. Kim has collaborated internationally with such prominent musicians such as Paul Edmund Davies, Leone Buyse, James Campbell, and David Perry, and has been heard in radio broadcasts for NPR, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and the Korean Broadcasting System. A popular clinician and adjudicator, she has presented master classes throughout the US, Canada, South Korea, and China, 10

also serving as chamber music coach at the Green Lake Summer Music Festival, resident pianist and artistic advisor to the Brandon Chamber Players, and artistic director of Mayfest in Manitoba, Canada. Born into a musical family, Dr. Kim is a graduate of Seoul National University, and holds a DMA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Kim served as a piano faculty member at Brandon University (MB), Lawrence University (WI), Beloit College (WI), Ripon College (WI), and is currently associate professor of piano, and chair of the keyboard division at the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities) School of Music. Director and Professor of the School of Music at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, Dr. Michael Kim enjoys a distinguished, multi-faceted career as an academic administrator, professor, and concert artist. A veteran of the concert circuit, Dr. Kim has performed repeatedly as soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Boston and Cincinnati Pops, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony, Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra London, the Florida Orchestra, the Calgary Philharmonic, and the symphonies of Toronto, Vancouver, CBC Vancouver, Vancouver Island, Victoria, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Regina, Saskatoon, Milwaukee, Green Bay, and Oklahoma City. He has toured extensively as solo recitalist and with the highly successful Music as Theatre production The Schumann Letters. He performs frequently with

his wife pianist Dr. Kyung Kim and sister violinist Helen Kim, and has also collaborated with James Ehnes, Edgar Meyer, James Campbell, members of the Canadian Brass, and the Ceclia, New Orford, Fine Arts, New Zealand String Quartets. Summer festival performances have included Ottawa’s Chamber Fest, Festival of the Sound, Colors of Music, Agassiz, Brevard, Aspen, Banff, Clear Lake, Huntsville, Heifetz, and Niagara. Dr. Kim most recently appeared in subscription performances with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra performing with legendary clarinetist Martin Frost. He holds a DMA from the Juilliard School, and was silver medalist in the 1992 Scottish International Competition in Glasgow, a prizewinner in the Leeds and Ivo Pogorelich International Piano Competitions, and grand prizewinner of the Canadian Music and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation National Radio Competitions. Jammie Lee developed an early interest in piano in South Korea and has continued his piano career with notable mentors. He is presently a 16-year-old high school student in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada. For the past two years, he has studied with Dr. Lawrence Jones, a retired professor at Brandon University’s School of Music. He also studied with Dr. Kyung Kim for five years. He most recently received third place at the 2016 Canadian National Music Festival held in Edmonton. He was previously the second prize winner in the international ENKOR Competition in the age category 11 to 15 years in 2015. He was awarded the Edith Munroe Scholarship (2015

Provincial Music and Arts Festival) and was the youngest ever winner of Western Financial Group Tudor Bowl as the most outstanding senior pianist at the 2015 Brandon Festival of the Arts. In his early career, he has placed second nationally in his age category in the National Finals of the 2010 Canadian Music Competition. Before immigrating to Canada, Lee was enrolled in the prestigious Musical Academy for gifted children at the Seoul Arts Centre, where he was the recipient of numerous awards, and performed actively in different venues throughout Korea. A native of South Korea, Michael Min is studying for his DMA in piano performance under Dr. Kyung Kim at the University of Minnesota. His honors include grand prize in the Seoul National Symphony Orchestra Competition and the second prize in the Music Education Newspaper Company in Seoul, Korea. He was also a prize winner in the Venusto Music Competition supported by the Mayor of Seoul, Korea. He was a faculty member (staff pianist) at Middle Tennessee State University (16–17), where he assisted Class Piano and Class Voice. He actively performs with the MTSU Wind Ensemble as a keyboardist. Min received his BA degree from the SahmYook University in Seoul, Korea where he was a student of Sook-Jin Lee and Joo-Soon Lee. He completed his MM in piano performance from Middle Tennessee State University where his principle teachers were Dr. Eun-byol Ko and Dr. Adam Clark. Nygel Witherspoon, age 16, has been studying the cello with his teacher, David Holmes, since he was three years old. He 11

He enjoys playing chamber music, and was coached for four years by Bruce Coppock. He has performed in master classes with Peter Wiley, Bruce Coppock, Benjamin Zander, Tanya Remenikova, Arek Tesarcyzk, and Amit Peled. Last year, he won the MNSOTA String Competition, and performed the first movement of the Dvorak Concerto with the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra. He will perform the same piece with the Minnesota Orchestra in the fall of 2017 and spring 2018. This past spring, he was a featured artist on Minnesota Varsity and performed the third movement of the Kodaly Cello Sonata at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul during a live radio broadcast on MPR. He performs on a cello generously donated by the Virtu Foundation. Classical pianist Yifei Xu performs a wide range of repertoire from the Baroque period to the most modern era. to approach music as a “New World Exploration.” The temperment of her piano performance is extraordinary; she is a unique and imaginative performer. Xu enjoys performing repertoire that is seldom played and uncovering musical hidden treasures. Her recent projects include J.N. Hummel Piano Concerto No.2 in A Minor, and Friedrich Kalkbrenner Piano Concerto No.1 in D Minor. Xu has performed solo and chamber recitals at the Middle School attached to the Central Conservatory of Music, in addition to many successful recitals in the recent years at Manhattan School of Music and other New York venues. She has participated and performed in the Almalfi Coast Piano Festival in Italy, Aspen Music Festival, and Merkin Concert Hall at Kaufmann Music Center. Recently, she has won Vivo International Music Competition, and was honored by Eisenberg/Fired Concerto Competition. Xu earned her BM and is completing her MM in piano performance at MSM with chairman of the piano department, Dr. Marc Silverman.
