Dr. Hayes Wicker, Senior Pastor “Basic Training”

Our military demands that each soldier, sailor, airman, and marine go through “Basic Training.” Our church has established a high priority of basic training for our teenagers. As a new Christian teenager, I learned how to have a quiet time, study the Bible, and memorize scripture at a mountain camp in northern Arizona. Our high schoolers will go to their summer camp at the beginning of this week, followed by our middle schoolers at the same location later in the week. I believe that we have the finest team of youth pastors in the nation, with Kevin Taylor and Greg Clydesdale. Some of your pastors, including Eric, Troy, and myself will also be teaching and enjoy getting to know our students. It is crucial that we “teach our children that the next generation know God’s testimonies and laws (Psalm 78:5, 6). As the Psalmist also declared, “With my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations” (Psalm 89:1). Children, teens, and adults must all know of “the steadfast love of the Lord” (Psalm 89:1). We are particularly grateful for your investment in millennials through your scholarship gifts. As I have said before, that was the only way that I could have gone to camp as a sixteen year old. Pray that many will come to know Christ as Lord and Savior. There is no better time for them to make a decision. Never forget that students particularly need godly associations of friendship and fellowship to counteract the negative peer influence in the world. The Lord is calling them as Joshua records, to “not mix with” the ungodly by “remaining among them” as primary friends. We tend to become like the people with whom we spend time. Even though we may still have non-Christian acquaintances and friends, our primary relationships of intimacy and sharing must be with those who share our convictions and love of Christ. Just as combat soldiers fight for their buddies in their unit, so must our students solidify that comradeship through camps and youth group. “Submerge” is this year’s camp theme, urging teens to “dive deeper than a surface faith.” The average number of sailors in a SEALs Basic Training class is 75, but usually only about 38 graduate and go on as SEA-AIR-LAND Commandos and elite warriors. May our kids grow deeper and stronger in perseverance, pursuing God, gaining power over temptation, and proclaiming the gospel. *There is a guest reception in the Commons following the Saturday night and Sunday morning worship services. Pastor would love to meet you!
