! Inspirational speaker W Mitchell is world famous for his !talks on persistence. He should know: a motorcycle accident left !him burned over sixty-five percent of his body and cost him his !fingers; and a plane crash paralyzed him from the waist down. !His message is that, of the 10,000 things he used to be able to do, !now he can do 9,000. Why focus on the other 1,000? His faith in the persistence of the human spirit is powerful. ! In today's Gospel reading from Matthew, Jesus is ! confronted by a woman asking for her daughter to be cleansed of !demons. Notice that she does not ask Jesus if he is Lord before !making her request, she already knows. Jesus does not answer !her right away; when she again pleads for his mercy and refers to !him as Lord, he grants her wish because of her persistence and her faith. ! Enabling this woman's persistence was her hope. Hope for ! goodness is the promise of God given through Jesus; it is the !anchor of our soul, and it allows us to be happy even in the face !of adversity. Hope is expressed and nourished in prayer (CCC !1820). Perhaps you've been praying for something but feel your !prayers haven't been answered? Continue to pray. Be persistent !in your faith; never lose hope. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! SACRAMENTS ! Catholic!Home!! Missions!Appeal! ! Special!Collection!next! weekend,!August!23/24!

Many dioceses right here in the United States do not have enough priests and trained lay ministers to serve their parishes. These dioceses are known as home missions. They struggle to fund basic and essential pastoral works such as religious education, seminarian and lay ministry training, and evangelization; and are unable to attend to the needs that are unique to the communities they serve. With your support, the Catholic Home Missions Appeal helps ease the struggle and form vibrant faith communities.

AUGUST 17, 2014!

! !! ! !! ! Readings for This Weekend: August 17, 2014 ! ! First Reading:! Isaiah 56:1, 6-7! ! Second Reading:! Romans 11:13-15, 29-32! ! Gospel Reading:! Matthew 15:21-28 ! Jesus said to the Canaanite woman, “O woman, great is ! your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And the woman’s ! daughter was healed. Nothing gets in the way of the Canaanite ! woman seeking healing from Jesus for her daughter, who was said to be ‘tormented by a demon.’ The woman kept calling out ! to Jesus to remove the demon (evil) that separated her daughter ! from God. Her great faith moved Jesus to grant her request. Faith ! is persistent ~~ single-minded ~~ achieves the end it seeks. Our ! faith must be great enough to overcome barriers. It must be persistent in focusing on Jesus. It must bear the fruit of salvation ! and healing. ! ! Adults: What helps you be persistent in your focus on Jesus? ! ! Youth: What helps you keep Jesus in your day? ! Readings for Next Weekend: August 24, 2014 ! !!
