A. Introduction and problem statement This project is intended to give the students an opportunity to apply their IT skills in the context of a real-world project. This experience would be useful in any project experience. This will also give them the experience of working in a team. The project implementation is divided into different phases. Though it does not reflect the exact phases of an IT project lifecycle, it will help the students to appreciate the different phases of a project like the Analysis, Design, Implementation and Testing which are the four major phases of the classic water fall model of Software Development Life Cycle.

  

The teacher divides the students into teams of 4 - 5 members The problem statement is presented and explained to the students Each team can have a team leader and a quality assurance person who is made responsible for the schedule and quality respectively.

Problem statement The medical facilities in Kerala are among the best when compared with other states in India. Yet there is a long way for us to go before we match the global standards. There are a lot of medical emergencies happening every day. One major requirement of many of these medical emergencies is availability of matching blood group. The situation in Kerala and also in other parts if India is that there is major gap between the requirement of blood and the availability of blood at the time of emergency. This problem can be remedied if people volunteer to donate blood on a regular basis. Blood is replenished within days of the donation and so healthy adult donors can donate blood once in every 3 months. There are a lot of misconceptions related to blood donation, which prevent even the educated people of Kerala from donating blood. Others who are willing may not donate since they do not realise the urgency of the problem. All these affect the availability of blood to the person in need. So we need to increase the awareness of people and enrol more voluntary blood donors. Having more voluntary blood donors would mean more supply of blood; which in turn means saving life. But what can be done to increase the awareness of people so that they volunteer for this? Some ways to tackle this are:  Conduct survey to understand how many people are regular donors.  Conduct seminars to make people aware of the need for blood donation and about the safety of blood donation.  Conduct blood donation camps.  Distribute material to make the people aware of the speciality of blood, frequently asked questions on blood and blood donation.  Partner with organisation that are interested in blood safety drive and enrol volunteers.

B. Initial design and project plan 

  

The teacher asks the students to discuss the issue. o How can they help in organising a blood donation camp? o What sort of mobilisation would they have to do? o From which all people should they take permission? o What are the different materials they need to prepare? o What are the characteristics of blood, what are the categories and what are the precautions used when blood is donated? o What are the different components of blood that are used for treatments? The result of the discussion should be a list of deliverables that each team needs to prepare. Once the students give the list, teacher can supplement it wherever necessary. Ask the students to give a plan for completing the work (implementation plan).

Note to the teacher: 1. All documents made by the students should be uploaded in the blog they create and also sent as attachment to the teacher. 2. The URL of the blog each team creates should be sent to the teacher and other teams as Email and tweet. 3. Teacher gives a set of guidelines that have to be followed for each deliverable. The deliverables made by each team should follow these guidelines. At the end of the implementation time, the work should be reviewed based on these guidelines. (The teacher is free to prepare a set of guidelines.)

C. Evaluation of the initial design 1. The teacher evaluates the project plan and list of deliverables of all the teams and gives them feedback. 2. The teacher reminds the students that the work has to be according to the guidelines given by the teacher.

D. The teacher asks the students to start their project work 1. The project has to be done as team work. The teacher ensures that the work is fairly divided among the members of the team. 243

2. The teacher monitors the progress of each team to see whether they are progressing according to the plan they gave. 3. Regular stand-up meetings can be scheduled to monitor the progress of the students. Make sure that team leader is responsible for the schedule and progress. 4. By the end of the allotted time for project implementation, the teacher should get all the deliverables.

Deliverables: 1. Presentation on blood, its features and categories, safety precautions during blood donation and eligibility conditions for being a blood donor in India. 2. Brochure for blood donation camp. 3. Notice for blood donation camps which are planned. 4. Leaflets containing frequently asked questions about blood donation. 5. Permission letters to be sent to people concerned. 6. Survey form to collect the awareness and preparedness of people for blood donation. 7. Statistics of blood group availability with supporting charts in Spreadsheet. 8. List of arrangements to be made for organising blood donation camp, with pricelist and expense details (Spreadsheet). 9. Blog on Blood donation and blood safety. 10. All documents made by the students should be linked in the blog they create and also sent as attachment to the teacher. 11. List of hospitals and clinics in the locality in alphabetical order with address and phone numbers. 12. Schedule for the day of blood donation camp including the inauguration, donation time, breaks and other details in tabular format (as in a school timetable). 13. Locate the nearest hospital in Google map. 14. Project report.

E. Review and correction 1. Teacher arranges for peer review, where another team reviews the work of a team and gives written feedback on the areas that do not follow the guidelines given by the teacher. 2. Based on the reviews given by the peer teams, the team has to correct the work to ensure that the work complies with the guidelines.

244

F. Presentation and Evaluation

1. Each team gives their presentation in front of the class. The good practices of presentations are also evaluated. 2. The peer teams are asked to note their feedbacks while a team presents. 3. At the end of each team’s presentation, the teachers and other teams can raise questions. 4. The teams are evaluated based on: a. Team presentation they make b. Content of the presentations c. Brochures d. Spreadsheets e. Notices f. Lists g. Blog, etc.

G. Review and feedback to the teams by the teacher and peers The teacher meets each team separately and gives the feedback. The feedback may include the following points:   

What did they do right in the team presentation? What are the areas for improvement? How effective was the content that they created?

After the feedback from the teacher, the feedback noted by peer teams a also shared.
