Policy:

Nutrition Education and Counseling (Mini-Lessons) Low-Risk nutrition Education (LRNE) follow up may be provided by a competent professional authority (CPA) or by trained non-CPA staff, i.e. WIC management support staff or other approved and trained staff when a CPA determines it appropriate. WIC Program Manual Chapter 5.

Purpose:

To describe the provision and documentation of LRNE for WIC clients (who, what, when, how)

Procedure:

WIC CPA will: 1. determine if a WIC participant is considered low risk at the time of certification 2. communicate to the WIC support via the WIC electronic medical record (WIC EMR) when a client needs to receive LRNE 3. At a certification, subsequent certification or mid-year assessment the CPA will “schedule” a nutrition education topic to be done by the interviewer at the next appointment. 4. maintain an up to date lesson plan folder for the county 5. train new staff about LRNE during orientation 6. routinely update current staff on topics individually and/or at staff meetings 7. record updates and LRNE training on a log forwarded to the Nutrition Director 8. change the nutrition education topic from “scheduled” to “completed” in the WIC EMR WIC support staff will 1. Provide LRNE when “scheduled” in the WIC EMR by a CPA on only lessons trained on 2. Receive routine training on LRNE
