• Born in a log cabin on the frontier

– 1st pres. Since Washington w/o college education

• Couldn’t spell

• Was, however, the traditional planter aristocrat

– Owned the Hermitage

• Became a very strong and forceful pres. – His 6 predecessors collectively vetoed 9 bills.

• On the grounds that they were unconstitutional

– He alone vetoed 12 bills.

• Simply b/c he didn’t like some of them • Led some to condemn him as “King Andrew I”

“The Spoils System” • Practice of rewarding loyal supporters w/ gov’t positions – “The the victor belong the spoils.”

• A.k.a. patronage • Resulted in the removal of hundreds of office holders • Justifications – Those who hold public office for a long time “are apt to acquire a habit of looking w/ indifference upon the public interests and of tolerating conduct from which the unpracticed man would revolt.” – “The duties of all public officers are . . . So plain and simple that men of intelligence may readily qualify themselves of their performance.” – Exemplified the “new democracy”
