Academic Honors West Henderson High School places great value on academic success and tries to recognize the students who work hard and do well in their classes. The following are the ways in which successful students are honored at graduation: Top 15 Students The top 15 students in the senior class wear a medallion at graduation which indicates their status as the highest ranked graduates. Honor Block Grade point averages (GPA) are calculated after the third nine weeks for seniors to qualify for Honor Block. Students who have maintained a 3.9 weighted GPA are recognized as Honor Block students. They wear a gold tassel on their graduation cap and have their names listed in the Commencement program. Academic Cords Gold: National Honor Society members. Silver: North Carolina Academic Scholars. These students have maintained a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.5 or higher and have taken at least two Honors or Advanced Placement courses over and above the courses required for graduation. A gold North Carolina Academic Scholar seal is affixed to their diploma. White: Quill and Scroll International Journalism Honor Society members. Green: Foreign Language Scholars. These students have completed a minimum of three courses in one foreign language, of which one credit must be taken during junior or senior year, and have attained a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA in that discipline as well as a 3.0 unweighted GPA overall. Lt. Blue: Fine Arts Scholars. These students have completed a minimum of three courses in one art discipline, of which one credit must be taken during junior or senior year, and have attained a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA in that discipline as well as a 3.0 unweighted GPA overall. Red: Career and Technical Education Scholars. The Henderson County CTE Scholars Program was established to recognize students who have excelled in Career and Technical education. Induction into the CTE Scholars Program requires students to meet several criteria including: completion of four CTE credits, one of which must be a cluster completer, minimum 3.25 GPA in all CTE courses and 3.0 unweighted GPA overall, submission of the application form by mid-April (see a CTE teacher for exact deadline), current membership in a CTE Student Organization, and submission of three recommendations, one of which must be from the CTE student organization advisor.
