Academic Proposal. Rationale:
What have you enjoyed? I have enjoyed many elements throughout this course. The practical side has been challenging but the most enjoyable. Having studied GCSE media, I had completed a lot of theory and no practical. I have expanded my knowledge on using the cameras, sound kit and editing software. I have also liked the different units to this course, and developing my understanding as the projects progress. I found that project 1, Advertising was the most enjoyable for me because as I got to experiment with camera angles and editing.
What was your greatest achievement?
For me my greatest achievement has been learning how to use the cameras effectively, so that shots aren’t over exposed. I have also learnt how to use Premier Pro and as the year has progressed I have expanded my knowledge on different editing techniques.
What skills have you developed?
The skills of which I have developed are being more confident in myself, when it comes to being in front of the camera, and also taking control of a shot and directing people so that I get the shot I want. Another skill that I have developed is my editing skills, I had never used Premier Pro before so I only knew the basics when it came to editing my first project, since then I have been able to expand my knowledge and use a range of techniques, to create a professional looking video.
How are you using those skills in this project?
I am using all these skills in my FMP by making sure that I put all my existing knowledge into this final project, but still be open minded when it comes to learning even more techniques that could improve my work. I’m also going to be using the skills I’ve learnt from Premier Pro to make sure that my final video is edited smoothly and up to my client’s standard, this links in with being confident as I’ll need to be directing my client as well as listening and taking on board my clients requests, in order to create a promotional film that’s professional and can be used on their website.
What has influenced your direction for this project? I was influenced by watching previous years FMP, and the idea of helping to promote a charity really stood out to me, especially because some charities don’t get enough recognition of the work that they do.
Project Concept.
What are you trying to produce? I want to produce a promotional video that the charity can use at conferences and on all their social media pages and their website, to show the work that they do to help other Charites. I want to also raise awareness about their organisation and get more people involved.
What kind of research will you need to do to support your projects development?
To support my project development I need to watch past videos which are of the same genre of mine. I also need to see if the charity has already had a promotional film made for them and how it was done, to expand my knowledge on the type of thing they are interested in. To find out what the audiences response was to existing SACM videos, I’m going to be showing them videos and asking them for their thoughts and feelings on that video. I’m going to be finding out the target audience by emailing my client and asking them who they aim the charity towards, and also the target audience of Jarrold and how they relate, once I know this I can then do an audience profile. To find out more about my charity I’m going to be emailing my client questions about the charity, the history, the different roles involved, etc. This way I will be able to get first-hand information about the charity and the history behind it. They also have a website with some information on, so I will be reading through their page and finding out who they’ve helped and how, then from this I can come up with questions to ask my client to find out even more information.
What resources will you need?
The resources I will need for this project are a camera (Canon 5D), a tripod, and the sound kit, so that I can still have my representative talking over cut away’s. To get to my location I will be using my local bus to get into the city.
What form will your project take?
For this project I’ll be creating a short promotional film in the form of an interview, asking my client questions about their charity work, and what they do to help the community. This video will also consist of GV’s and talking heads.
Evaluation:
How are you going to do/present this?
Throughout this project I’m going to be to showing my progress by doing weekly vlogs and presenting them onto my blog. Within these vlogs I’m going to be reflecting on the work I have done that week, analysing the research I have done and noted down in my sketch book. In my sketch book I’m going to be writing down any ideas I have for my video, research into my client and their organisation and anything I want to ask my client, this is then all going to be explained on my vlog. My vlogs are going to help with my progress as it’ll be showing my progress as the weeks go on, and what I’ve got up to that week. It also helps to see what obstacles I’ve faced that week and how I got over it. These vlogs will be really effective, as it’ll show my progress right from the planning stage to the finished product.
Action Plan and timeline. To plan out my time effectively I’m going to be using a weekly planner, writing down on each day what I want to get down I have used ‘to do’ lists in the past and I have found them very useful for me as this way I don’t push myself into setting too much work to do in a day. This also helps me to not feel stressed, as I feel more productive if I stick to my to do list, rather than feeling annoyed because I didn’t get loads of work done. Action Plan, I plan on filming my video as soon as possible, so that I can edit it and get it up on my blog and social media pages to get feedback from my target audience. I’m also going to be doing weekly vlogs reflecting in detail what I’ve done that week. As Research is a big part to this project I’m going to be annotating promotional videos related to my own, and really going into depth about what they have included. I’m going to be doing some form of research a day, to ensure that I have enough. Before I meet with my client to film the interview I’m going to be researching into their charity and finding out as much as I can about it, so that I ask relevant questions about their charity.
Proposed research sources and bibliography.
For my research I’m going to be doing both primary and secondary research. However, because of my intended video I’m mainly going to be doing secondary research, which includes watching videos on YouTube relating to my own, and fully annotating them, to see what I could use in mine as inspiration. I’ve been watching videos made by charities, explaining what they do etc, within these videos the main focus is an interview which then goes on to have GV’s and pictures over the top of past events and how people have been helped by their charity work. All the shots from the interview are positioned at a Mid-shot throughout, this is something that I’m going to keep in mind when filming mine. I’ve found these videos really influential as it’s helped me to get a better idea of how mine should look to conform to the codes and conventions and create a professional looking video which appeals to my target audience. I’ve also done some primary research which consists of asking my client who their target audience is, as my client is Jarrold their charity is aimed towards 35+ both male and female, as this is the most popular demographic of the store itself. I’m also going to be doing more primary research to find out first-hand what my
target audience are looking for in this video. I’m going to be using www.citethisforme.com to document the existing SACM videos I’ve watched.
