So You Want To Advance! First of all congratulations and thank you for developing your skills with us here at NASA Great Lakes! Advancement from one HPDE level to the next is not a difficult process, but there are steps that need to be followed to ensure all involved have the proper expectations. The process will begin with you, the student driver, taking a self-assessment inventory of what skills you have developed in your particular group. Then, working with your weekend instructor, you will review that self-assessment with him / her to get their feedback. Once you and your weekend instructor are satisfied that a check-off ride is warranted, you will take a written test and then a check-off ride with one of our most senior instructors. Below is a breakdown of what you need to do and be aware of to advance. 1. Obtain an HPDE 1 to HPDE 2 Skills Assessment Form from your group leader, and review the items on the self-evaluation form. Indicate if you are Proficient or if you Need Improvement. 2. When all items are marked as Proficient, give the form to your weekend instructor. He or she will also indicate their assessment of your skill development. When all items are marked Proficient by the weekend instructor, they will sign the Form and give it back to you. 3. Return the Form to your group leader who will give you a written test. The test is open book and open note. Please have your passport ready for the group leader when you return the test for grading. The group leader will return the Skills Assessment Form to you. 4. If you pass the test, then the group leader will attempt to schedule a check-off ride for you. Please note that there are a limited number of check-off ride slots available, and our best efforts will be made to get you scheduled that weekend. If a slot is not available, then you will have priority at the next NASA event for a check-off ride. 5. Check with your group leader to see when your check-off ride is scheduled. The check-off instructor will ride with you during the scheduled session. Be early to grid for your check-off ride to give you and your check-off ride instructor a chance to talk. Be sure to have your Skills Form ready for the check-off ride instructor. 6. After the check-off ride is completed the instructor will either sign off on your form to advance you to the next level or recommend further skills development. In either case, the results will be discussed with you. 7. Return the Skills Assessment Form to your current group leader. The group leader will let you know what happens from this point on.
