Advances in Psychotherapy

The Series

Main features of the volumes: • Practice oriented: The main emphasis is on information that therapists and practitioners can use in their daily practice. • Authoritative: Each volume is written and edited by leading authorities. • Easy to read: The most important information is summarized in tables, illustrations, or boxes, and highlighted by marginal notes. • Compact: Each volume consists of 80–100 pages. • Regular publication: We aim to publish 4 volumes each year.

The Series: This new series provides therapists with practical, evidence-based guidance on the diagnosis and treatment of the most common disorders seen in clinical practice – and does so in a uniquely “reader-friendly” manner. Each book is both a compact “how-to” reference on a particular disorder, for use by professional clinicians in their daily work, as well as an ideal educational resource for students and for practice-oriented continuing education. The most important feature of the books is that they are practical and “reader-friendly.” All have a similar structure, and each is a compact and easy-to-follow guide covering all aspects of practice that are relevant in real-life. Tables, boxed clinical “pearls,” and marginal notes assist orientation, while checklists for copying and summary boxes provide tools for use in daily practice. The Society of Clinical Psychology (APA Division 12) is planning a system of home study continuing education courses based on the series that an individual can complete on the web.

Structure and Content of the Volumes: • Description: Terminology; Definition; Epidemiology; Course and Prognosis; Differential Diagnosis; Comorbidities; Diagnostic Procedures and Documentation • Theories and Models of the Disorder • Diagnosis and Treatment Indications • Treatment: Methods of Treatment; Mechanisms of Action; Efficacy and Prognosis; Variations and Combinations of Methods; Problems in Carrying out the Treatments • Case Vignette; Further Reading; References • Appendix: Tools and Resources

Publication: Around 4 volumes per year, each containing 80–100 pages. The volumes may be purchased individually or by Series Standing Order (minimum of 4 successive volumes). The advantages of ordering by Series Standing Order: You will receive each volume at the special Series Standing Order price of US $19.95, saving around 20% compared to the single-volume price of US $24.95.

The past 10 years have seen a dramatic increase of interest in psychosocial treatments of bipolar disorder. There is now substantial empirical evidence suggesting the effectiveness of such treatments. However, this accumulated information has not yet been transferred into clinical practice in many settings. Help is now at hand. This compact volume brings to the practitioner a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to the treatment of bipolar disorder that is practical, and easily accessible, and can be readily applied in clinical practice. This practitioner’s guide begins by describing the main features of bipolar disorder and considerations for differential diagnosis based on DSM-IV and ICD-10 criteria. Following this, current theories and models are described, along with decision trees for evaluating the best treatment options. The volume then guides the reader through a systematic, integrated approach to treatment, based on the best of recent research. The authors describe a structured directive therapy that is also collaborative and client centered. Special considerations, including managing suicide risk, substance misuse, and medication nonadherence, are addressed. The volume is rounded off by the inclusion of clinically oriented tools and sample forms.

The Authors Robert Reiser, PhD, is a Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy and Director of the Gronowski Psychology Clinic at Pacific Graduate School of Psychology in Palo Alto, CA, where he supervises graduate psychologists in training, teaches classes in cognitive behavioral therapy, and provides workshops, consultation, and technical assistance related to improvements in the treatment of bipolar disorder in community mental health settings. Dr. Reiser’s primary clinical and research interests involve developing and implementing evidence-based treatments in a range of community and clinic settings. Larry W. Thompson, PhD, received his doctorate from Florida State University in 1951. Since then he has held the rank of Professor at Duke University, University of Southern California, and Stanford University. Dr. Thompson’s recent interests have focused on the problems and issues involved in transporting evidenced-based psychotherapeutic interventions from the research laboratory into community settings.

Summer 2005 ca. 90 pages, softcover 0-88937-312-4 US $24.95 By series standing order: US $19.95

Over the past 30 years there has been a dramatic increase in the availability of convenient and legal gambling opportunities. Most people can reach a casino in a matter of a few hours, lottery tickets in minutes, or an online gaming site in seconds. Accompanying this proliferation of gambling is a growing understanding that between 5% and 9% of adults experience significant to severe problems due to their gambling activities. These problems have become a real health concern, with substantial costs to individuals, families, and communities. The objective of this book is to provide the clinician – or graduate student – with essential information about problem and pathological gambling. After placing this behavioral addiction and its cooccurring difficulties in perspective, by describing its proliferation, the associated costs, and diagnostic criteria and definitions, the authors present detailed information on a strategy to assess and treat gambling problems in an outpatient setting. They go on to provide clear and easy-to-follow intervention guidelines, including homework assignments, for a brief and cost-efficient cognitive behavioral approach to problem gambling, involving stepped care and guided self-change. Means of countering problems and barriers to change and vivid case vignettes round off this thorough but compact guide for clinicians.

The Authors James P. Whelan, PhD, is Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of Clinical Training at the University of Memphis, as well as co-director of the Institute for Gambling Education and Research and the Gambling Clinic. Dr. Whelan’s research spans several areas, including efficacy for psychological treatments, problem gambling, and sport and exercise psychology. Andrew W. Meyers, PhD, is Professor in the Department of Psychology and Vice Provost for Research at the University of Memphis, as well as co-director of the Institute for Gambling Education and Research. Dr. Meyers has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Behavior Therapy, Health Psychology, and Cognitive Therapy and Research, and for the past 25 years has maintained a private practice focused on addictions and health behavior.
