Introduction

The Chemical Fume Hood industry has witnessed rapid growth in recent times. With increased demand of research and development, laboratories are increasing their capital and R&D expenditures – Hence, arising the need of safe and reliable Fume Hoods. According to the standard definition, Fume Hood is “A type of local ventilation device that is designed to limit exposure to hazardous or toxic fumes, vapors or dusts .” It has numerous applicable laws, codes, and standards to be followed as compared to any other mechanical device in a laboratory. The proper operation of fume hood directly impacts the health and safety of the laboratory personnel. Inhalation is a major route for entry of chemicals into the body. Chemical fumes and vapors can directly enter the body causing numerous health risks. A properly designed and maintained fume hood supported by a well-designed laboratory ventilation system reduces the risk of exposure to various hazardous particles. In order to raise awareness about the Safety, Standards, and Best Practices regarding Fume Hoods, GD Lab Solutions Pvt. Ltd The workshop began on a positive note, with Mr. Mayur Patel welcoming all the participants and briefly explaining the motto behind it. He shared his vision for GD Lab Solutions Pvt. Ltd. and laboratory casework and chemical fume hood industry. He dedicated the workshop to two themes: Laboratory Safety; Planning, Designing, and Creating Labs of The Future. Session II: All about Hoods Mr. Chip Albright Laboratories can be a dangerous place to work; but they can be made safer by selecting proper safety equipment including the Chemical Fume Hoods. Focusing on safety, Mr. Chip Albright mentioned that Chemical Fume Hoods minimizes the exposure to airborne contaminants and protection in the event of an explosion or fire. Talking about the working principles, Mr. Chip Albright said a properly maintained fume hood exhausts hazardous fumes, dusts, and mists to the atmosphere after dilution. He further explained that a fume hood introduces room air through the face of the hood, toxic fumes are contained and diluted in the hood by the flow of air and are safely exhausted outside. Mr. Chip Albright also busted the common myth that more the face velocity, safer the hood. He mentioned that too much velocity causes turbulence as unsteady vortices appear on many scales and interact with each other. Session III: Are Your Hoods Safe? Mr. Chip Albright In most of the cases, laboratory staff doesn’t include themselves while describing laboratory ventilation system. Laboratory staffs’ actions influence containments affecting the overall performance of fume hoods. A survey suggests that most of the accidents are not caused by the hoods, but how a hood is used. For fume hoods to perform efficiently, training is critical. A best designed system can also yield unsatisfactory results when users perform activities outside the design envelope. Mr. Chip Albright during this session mentioned that Fume Hoods are not a stand-alone device. The total Fume Hood system includes: 1) The Hood User 2) The Hood & The Lab Ventilation System 3) Maintenance People 4) Supply & Exhaust Air Systems 5) Door & Window Locations 6) Lab Design & Conditions 7) Processes Inside Hood 8) Safety Procedures For Hood to work properly, the complete system of should be designed properly. If ignored or badly designed, then the system would not work properly. Explaining the importance of safety and Standard Operating Procedures, Mr. Chip Albright mentioned it is a liability of an owner, architect, engineer, and even users to know and understand the proper working of fume hoods. Symptoms like signs of corrosion in lab; smell of chemicals; low face velocity; alarms failures; etc. should not be taken lightly. If a hood is not providing necessary safety then it should be replaced. Mr. Chip Albright spoke at length about the design issues of the hood- Parameters affecting hood performance; Selection of hood according to the requirement; Energy efficiency; Room balance clean to dirty; Exhaust Types; Laboratory design; and Fume Hood locations. He also explained numerous tests, standards, and certifications for fume hood like ASHARE 110-1995; SEFA 1-2005; NIH; EPA; EN 14175; ANSI Z9.5-2003, etc.

Session V: Fume Hood Best Practices Mr. Chip Albright Mr. Chip Albright spoke about some of the best practices when working with Fume Hoods. Regular inspections and preventive maintenance makes sure that hood operates safely. The most important safety measure is restricting sash height. It should be operated at 18” or less to increase safety, reduce risk and energy consumption. The rate at which particles or vapors are released should be controlled in order to minimize the exposure to the chemicals. It is said “Failing to plan is planning to fail”. Hence, Mr. Chip Albright focused a lot on a plan of action in case of emergencies, fire, and power failure. Fume hood etiquettes are also important in order not only to take care of your well-being but your co-workers’ well-being also. Being ignorant about laboratories’ ventilation system and leaving experiments unattended can be life-threatening. It is imperative to note that the hood is not a substitute for personal protective equipments. The hood should be kept uncluttered and clean by removing the old experiments equipments and chemicals. In order to avoid turbulence, the operator should approach the hood slowly and open & close the sash slowly. Activities around hood and in laboratories should be reduced while doing a hazardous experiment in the hood. Hoods are one of the most misused and under used safety equipments in the laboratory. Remember Safety is not by chance, but by choice.
