The AIA Women in Design committee is co-hosting the national Women's Leadership Summit this September in Seattle. It is going to be an exciting month of design activities in our City, with both the Summit and the annual Seattle Design Festival taking place at the same time. The Design Festival is a month-long event in September 2015 put on by the non-profit organization Design in Public, with the theme Design for Equity. The major event of the festival is a Block Party in Pioneer Square the weekend of September 12-13. We are seeking artists to help us in celebrate the legacy of Seattle women architects during these events. The AIA Women in Design committee is working on a special event for the Design Festival to highlight the achievements and history of female architects in Seattle. The AIA (American Institute of Architects) College of Fellows are members elected to Fellowship by a jury of their peers as an acknowledgement of their contribution to the profession. AIA Seattle has elected 194 fellows in its chapter history, 22 of whom are women. The event we are planning will celebrate these 22 individuals. “A” Gallery space in Pioneer Square has been offered by Integrus Architecture to showcase the women AIA Fellows. We will be collecting a photograph of each of the Fellows along with some information about their career to match to an artist to prepare an 11x17 drawing, painting, collage, computer rendering or multimedia work based on the photograph. We anticipate having one artist for each fellow who has chosen to participate in the show. The portraits will be showcased in “A” Gallery (located at 117 S Main St) during the month of September to coincide with the Seattle Design Festival, and an opening will occur during the Block Party. Following their display, we would like to offer the portraits to the women fellows as a gift of appreciation for their commitment to the design community in Seattle. We are not able to provide compensation for the artwork; but your name and work will be published in the Design Festival materials and you will be acknowledged on the AIA webpage and weekly newsletter. It is our hope that these pieces serve to celebrate previous generations paving the road for women in our design community. Please fill out the attached form and e-mail to
[email protected] by July 1, 2015. Photographs and information on the fellows will be provided to artists by July 13, 2015. Pieces must be submitted by August 20, 2015.
“A” Gallery is located at 117 S Main St Seattle, WA
