About AIFPA All India Food Processors' Association (AIFPA) established in the year 1943 has been rendering great service to the growth and development of Food Processing Industries in the country since its inception. AIFPA has been organising Workshops, Interactive Sessions, National & International Seminars for more than two decades keeping in view the requirements of the food processing industry. AIFPA also publishes a bi-monthly tecnical Journal, “Indian Food Packer” since 1943 and started bringing out monthly E-Newsletter for the last three years. The Association maintains a close liaison with the Research Institutions and provides necessary inputs to different Ministries and Departments like Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises and APEDA.AIFPA has also instituted several Awards which are being given every year to selected personalities who have made significant contribution in different areas for the development of Food Processing Industries in the country. From the year 2011, AIFPA has also ventured into organising events and exhibitions for the benefit of Food Processors at large as food processing is one of the major sectors in India in terms of production, growth, consumption and export. India's Food Processing Sectors cover fruits & vegetables, spices, meat and poultry, milk & milk products, alcoholic beverages, fisheries, plantation products, grain processing, ready-to-eat & drink foods and other consumer product groups like confectionaries, chocolates and cocoa products, soya – based products, mineral water, high protein foods etc.

Some Key Indicators Ÿ India has a largely untapped domestic market of over 1.21 billion consumers of whom 300 million consume

processed and packaged foods while an additional 200 million are expected to shift to processed food consumption by 2015. Ÿ Largest producer of wheat & rice/fruits/vegetables/milk/livestock in the world. Ÿ Food Processing Industry has been declared a Priority Sector for bank lending. Ÿ No industrial license is required for food and agro-processing industries except for alcoholic beverages and a few items reserved for small scale sector. Ÿ Excise Duty on processed fruits and vegetables has been reduced considerably whereas in certain processed foods it is completely waived off. Ÿ Customs Duty on refrigerated motor vehicles has been waived while Customs Duty on food processing machinery reduced from 7.5% to 5%. Ÿ Import of food processing machinery allowed freely with low level of Duties. Import of Capital Goods for export of agricultural products and their value added variants under Export Promotion Capital Goods (EPCG) is allowed Duty-free.

Vision & Opportunities Ÿ India produces annually 120 million tonnes of milk (highest in the world), 210 million tonnes of fruits & vegetables (second largest), 485 million

livestock (largest), 230 million tonnes food-grains (third largest), 7.0 million tonnes of fish (third largest), 489 million poultry and 45,200 million eggs. Ÿ India’s agricultural production base is strong but at the same time wastage of agri-horti produce is very high. Processing level of fruits & vegetables is very low i.e.around 2.2%. Ÿ Government of India’s Vision Document 2015 states: (i) Enhancement of processing level from 6% in 2005 to 20% by 2015, (ii) Enhancement of Value addition from 20% in 2005 to 35% by 2015 and (iii) Enhancement of Share in Foreign Trade from 1.5% in 2005 to 3% by 2015.This coupled with India’s 169 million hectares of arable land which is larger than China,there exists inherent capacity to raise the level of Food Processing . Ÿ With pro development Government policies & incentives there is a great opportunity to invest in this sector and set up world class food processing industries. Investment can also be made in areas like Cold Chain from Farm to Fork, Cleaning, Grading & Sorting, Multi Chamber Cold Storages, Modern Food Processing, New & Innovative Food Products, Refrigerated Transportation, Design & Development of Food Processing machinery,Training of Manpower,Testing & QA Laboratories and Export of Processed Foods from India.
