Alice is an exceptional Occupational Therapist with remarkable professional experience working with children and young adults both in the UK and internationally. Alice practices at the National Star College, a world-class further education college and rehabilitation centre for young adults with complex disabilities, alongside her work through The OT Centre. She has previously worked overseas in Malawi managing a multidisciplinary paediatric practice, assisting in the development and expansion of therapy services in the country. Alice has presented at a number of international forums including the World Federation of Occupational Therapy Congress and has been a guest lecturer at Coventry, Southampton and Leeds Universities, sharing her passion, knowledge and experience with undergraduates. Alice is regarded as a friendly and supportive team player who cares passionately about Occupational Therapy and providing high standards of service. She has extensive experience working with children and young adults who have complex cognitive, physical, environmental and social needs, in a number of clinical settings including mainstream and specialist education. She has provided innovative and effective solutions to enable individuals to access and participate meaningfully in activities of daily living. She has worked with individuals with a wide range of conditions, including Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophies, Autism and Learning Difficulties, offering assessments and interventions. Alice is able to liaise effectively with clients, their carers, families and professionals to develop and prioritise client-centred goal plans and embed her practice. She seeks to come alongside individuals and their families, understanding their motivations in order to provide client centred, realistic and enabling therapy provision.

Alice has a heart for her local community and has shared her knowledge and skills widely providing training sessions for charities and church groups locally to equip individuals to support and further enable inclusion of young people with additional needs. Alice has previously worked overseas in Malawi managing a multidisciplinary paediatric practice. During her three years in Malawi, Alice assisted in the development and expansion of therapy services in the country and was a part of a group working to establish a curriculum for an Occupational Therapy programme. Alice has a 1st Class Honours degree in Occupational Therapy and has completed a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) extending and diversifying her skill set. Alice is registered with the Health & Care Professions Council and is a member of the British Association of Occupational Therapists and College of Occupational Therapists Specialist Sections in Independent Practice.

Post Held:

Responsible for a clinical caseload of 16-25 year olds with varying complex disabilities. Providing high quality assessment, individualised treatment sessions and evaluation to develop young people’s independence in areas that matter to them. Strong multidisciplinary focus to ensure skills are embedded, optimising individuals participation in activities of daily living. A 24 hour postural management approach is taken to ensure students complex postural needs are addressed. Specialised in providing sensory processing training and strategies across the college (holds SI level 1 qualification) and supporting in particular students with challenging behaviours. Supervise a number of junior therapy staff and student placements. Whilst at the college Alice has been involved in numerous projects including: developing a one handed wheelchair lap belt ‘handyclix’ which is currently in the final stages of production, visiting Norway with the ‘All Aboard’ project to evaluate and review specialist education overseas and supported an adaptive skiing trip for seven young adults with complex disabilities to Andorra. July 2011 – April 2014: Post Held:

Sandi Rehabilitation Centre, Malawi (Worked in Lilongwe & established the Blantyre centre) Centre Manager and Occupational Therapist

Responsible for managing a multi-disciplinary team, overseeing the business operations and finances whilst maintaining a clinical caseload. Based in Lilongwe for eighteen months then relocated to Blantyre to establish and manage a second centre. Caseload was varied working with children aged 0-18 years with conditions including Cerebral Palsy, Global Developmental Delay, Autism or functional daily challenges such as feeding, skills for dressing and managing in school. With limited resources and access to other services, practice was innovative and worked closely with parents, carers and school providers to ensure progress and embed skills. One of the provisions Alice developed was a life skills based group for young adults to attend the centre on a daily basis to receive vocational rehabilitation, skill development sessions within activities of daily living whilst building confidence, communication and social skills. During her time in Malawi Alice was an active member of the Occupational Therapy Association of Malawi (OTAM) who were working towards developing a World Federation approved Occupational Therapy Programme.

August 2011- December 2012: Post Held:

DIPD Charity, Malawi Development & Integration of People with Disabilities (DPID) - Lilongwe, Malawi Volunteer Occupational Therapist and Community Trainer

Volunteered providing therapy and inclusion training for teachers and volunteers at the weekend in rural settings and at a local refugee camp. Much of the work related to training families and caregivers about disability and supporting them to meet the needs of their children with disabilities. September 2010 – July 2011: Post Held:

Birmingham Community NHS Healthcare Trust Paediatric Occupational Therapist

Predominantly based in schools and community clinics providing assessment and therapy to children aged 0-18 and their families. Equipment assessment and provision was a significant part of this role and ensuring the home environment was suitable for their needs. Actively involved in service development to review and implement SMART Goal based therapy provision. August 2009– September 2010: Post Held:

NHS Gloucestershire Occupational Therapy Department Rotations in Paediatrics, Trauma & Orthopaedics & General Medicine Band 5 Occupational Therapy Rotation

Rotational programme initially in paediatrics, providing hospital based support and community OT provision for children with predominantly physical disabilities. Assessment clinics, utilising standardised assessments and writing treatment programmes were key in this role. Working on the Trauma and Orthopaedics and medical wards, lent itself to developing sound discharge planning skills, working within the multidisciplinary team as well as running groups and health promotion sessions.
