2016 Scientific Ballooning Technologies Workshop Title Recent Technology Advances in Soft Landing for Balloon Payloads Author Allen Lowry (Airborne Systems) Abstract Airborne Systems has been at the forefront in the development of landing impact attenuation systems since 1990’s. This experience includes airbag based landing systems for space capsules, external crash attenuation systems for military helicopters, and air-dropped cargo soft landing systems. Advanced modelling and simulation techniques and tools, emerging lightweight materials, and innovative inflation and venting approaches enable optimized designs for reduced weight and improved performance. This presentation will provide an overview of these technologies and their application to improved balloon payload soft landing systems.
