Alyssa Valdez Government and Economics 2nd period Capitalism vs. Communism In Government and Economics my task is to write a comparison paper, comparing Economic Systems. In this comparison paper I will be comparing Capitalism and Communism. I will give pros and cons about the two. I plan to persuade my audience to believe in Capitalism, and give factual evidence about the two. Capitalism is based on private ownership and the means to production and on individual economic freedom. In capitalism you can own your own business and have the right to free competition, without government involvement. In “The Ayn Rand Lexicon” author Harry Binswanger states “ In a capitalist society, no man or group may initiate the use of physical force against others.” This shows that government can not get involved. Government may get involved when human rights are violated. The business owner has the right to sell and produce products as they please. Supply and demand. In a capitalist system or place prices are determined by how many products there are and how many people want them. For example if a product comes out that everyone likes the demand will be high and the supply could be low. When supplies increase, prices tend to drop. If prices drop, demand usually increases until the supply is gone. Then prices will rise again but only as long as demand is high. Supply and demand controls prices and economic values. Some people argue that no country is truly capitalist, but America could fall under a Capitalist country. Communism is a is a socioeconomic system structured upon common ownership of the means of production and by the absence of social classes. In a communist
country government dictates what the people do. Government provides free health care and help to the people, but they have no rights when it comes to the government. In a communist country they have to pay higher taxes in order to go to the hospital and not have to pay for anything. In a communist country the wages is the same for every worker. There is no incentive to go to work, because even if you have worked at the same place for many years you still are not going to be able to get a raise or move up within the company. All businesses are owned by government the people are not allowed to own their own. Supply and demand is hard to balance because the government decides the products and productions. Which means there is no competitions between businesses. There is no freedom of speech. Their ideologies is that everyone is equal. They are all in the same social class because, they all get the same wages. The main part of communism is to try and gain profit by government. In “A Glossary Of Political Economy Terms” author Paul M. Johnson states that “ Any ideology based on the communal ownership of all property and a classless social structure, with economic production and distribution to be directed and regulated by means of an authoritative economic plan that supposedly embodies the interests of the community as a whole.” (p.g1) This backs up my information I gave about the social class and being equal. So, Capitalism is a better system than Communism because, as a citizen you are free to own your own business. That is good because, if you have a talent such as cutting hair and doing hair you could open a Salon. In a capitalist country you are a free
person and you have incentives. If you want to be your own person and have your own freedom choose Capitalism. Work Cited Page http://aynrandlexicon.com/lexicon/capitalism.html http://www.auburn.edu/~johnspm/gloss/communism
