JESUS CURES A DEMONIAC Then they came to Capernaum, and on the Sabbath Jesus entered the

synagogue and taught. The people were astonished at His teaching, for

He taught them as one having

authority and not as the scribes. In their synagogue was a man with an

unclean spirit; he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?

Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!" Jesus rebuked him and said, "Quiet! Come out of him!" The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him. All

were amazed and asked one another, "What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even

the unclean spirits and they obey him."

His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee.

Synagogue

A Jewish house of worship.

Astonish

A sudden feeling of surprise.

Authority

Having respect from others.

Whenever Jesus teaches at the synagogue, the

people listening to Him feel a great respect for Jesus that is different from the other scribes.

The unclean spirit also knows who Jesus is and

fears Him, but Jesus stays calm and cleanses the person. By cleansing the unclean spirit, Jesus

shows us that He not only teaches about our Rebuke

faith, but He shows us what our faith can do for others.

The people in today’s reading know Jesus is special just by listening to His teachings. Jesus also knows

this, but He still cleanses the unclean spirit so the person can be free. Jesus is here to serve us and He does that through what He says and through His actions.

As disciples of Jesus, we want to serve other people and share our faith with them too. We can do these things by telling our friends about what we believe in, but we can also show them the power of our faith in our everyday actions and behaviors.

Kindness is a state or characteristic of being kind.
