Narrative Therapy is one of the most prominent postmodern approaches of therapy. It is based on the belief that people make sense of life experiences by storying their experiences. Through stories we make sense of who we are and what we value.

Narrative therapy further holds the idea that problems are manufactured in social, cultural, and political contexts. By the time people come to counseling the stories they constructed for themselves and their lives become dominated by problems that work to oppress them. Through narrative therapy, counselors brings these problem-saturated stories to the center of therapy and help clients retell them in their preferred way of being which allow them to reconstruct their identity, hopes, and dreams. Narrative therapy does not focus on “experts” solving problems. Rather, it focuses on people discovering through conversations, their preferred and previously unacknowledged and hidden possibilities found within themselves and unrecognized story-lines.
