Place: An office in central police headquarters. During the performance strong language will be used, guns may be drawn, and people will fall down. However, there will be no cigarette smoking, not even of the herbal kind. Accidental Death of an Anarchist was first staged by Dario Fo on December 5, 1970 in Varese, Italy. That production by theater group Collettivo Teatrale La Comune played to audiences totaling more than half a million on its Italian tour. This play is not merely a dramatic invention. It is also a theatrical response to a serious crime. Dario Fo based his play on real events and the dialog in the play is in part a reconstruction of authentic documents from the actual case in question: the December 12, 1969 bombing of the Agricultural Bank in Milan and the subsequent interrogation and “accidental death” of the anarchist Giovanni Pinelli who flew out the window of the fourth floor of police headquarters after 72 hours of questioning. While the first Italian audiences laughed uproariously, they also understood that some of the characters depicted on stage had probably committed murder. “I realized that a criminal act had been conducted by the state, but people were calmly accepting the results of the official investigation. When I injected absurdity into the situation, the lies became apparent.”- Dario Fo This translation keeps many Italian references, but some have been adapted to reflect circumstances in this country. What parallels exist beyond this, you must decide for yourself.
