Answers to the Second Terminal Evaluation 2017-18 Standard X English 1. The tiger was a trained one and it was handled by its own familiar trainer, Mr.Thorat. So the film crew expected it to be calm and obedient. But it jumped and rolled wildly and ferociously instead of walking sedately in a dignified manner. 2. If the wire was fixed without a tiger-skin collar, the hair on the tiger’s neck would be flattened and wire would be visible to the viewers. 3. Mr.Thorath’s startled and helpless face revealed that he was also frightened by the unexpected behaviour of the tiger and he lost confidence in controlling it. 4. Ray says, “We stood around foolishly, watching a new and strange kind of circus which we were getting to see for free”. This expression reveals his sense of humour. 5. “Startled” and “taken aback” are similar to “shocked” in meaning. 6. No sooner had the tiger was called out than it responded and sprang out of its cage. 7. At the arrival of the poetry, the poet’s imagination knew no bounds and his creativity woke up. Everything in the complex universe was opened before him as poetic subject within his reach. 8. Fire and flowers are two powerful and beautiful objects in the universe. They refer to the burning passion and emotional ecstasy of the poet. 9. He says so because when he started composing he was not so confident. He was really doubtful if his lines would be pure nonsense or an ignorant man’s wisdom. 10. “Planets, palpitating plantations.” 11. These lines are part of the poem “The Ballad of Father Gilligan” which is a perfect ballad by WB Yeats in every sense. This poem tells the story of an old priest Father Gilligan. Half of his people in the parish were either in sick-bed or already dead due to an epidemic. Day and night Father Gilligan was in service of them and he was very tired and weak. He could not attend one sick-man’s last moments, as he fell asleep in his chairs. Realizing that he failed to do his duty, next day morning in great grief Father Gilligan rode on his horse to the man’s house. Where, his wife told the priest that her husband had already died and she asked him why he came again. From her question Father understood that in his absence God had sent an angel to perform his duties. He knelt and cried in repentance and thanked God for His mercy.

The rhyme scheme of the poem is ABCB. The images of a powerful but merciful God and a pious priest can be visualized from these lines. Repeating the line “The old priest Peter Gilligan” and the words “priest” and “Peter”, the poetic devices “refrain” and “alliteration” are used respectively. The line “As merry as a bird” is an example of “simile”. Theme of the poem is made up of God’s mercy and the priest’s pity and piety. 12 .

Coalinga, California, USA. 13 Dec 2017 Dear Sir, I am writing this letter in a mood of immense pleasure. As you very well know, after the initial painful and troublesome experiences, finally I won the scholarship jacket. I am sure it wouldn’t have been possible if teachers like you had not supported me. I had heard accidentally the argument between you and our Math teacher Mr. Boone, which I haven’t disclosed to anyone so far. You firmly stood for justice and talked for me. I am very much obliged and my words cannot express my gratitude to you. Still I say thank you very much for your kind-hearted support. Yours obediently, Sd/ Martha.

Doctor: Good morning, my friend! Friend: Good morning, why did you wake up so early? Doctor: Early! It’s eight o’clock now. Would you come and help me to shift my things to the new house? Friend: Yes, why not? Let’s go. Doctor: It was a horrible night. If you didn’t help me find a new house, where would I go now? Friend: You were lucky. The snake was attracted by its own beauty and gave up you. Doctor: Perhaps I am not so handsome, am I? Friend: You’re handsome, but the snake may be prettier than you. Doctor: The door is open! Did I forget to close it last night?

Friend: Perhaps yeah! Be careful while entering the room; the snake may be still there. Doctor: All my things are gone! Some thieves have already cleaned out everything. Friend: I think you have lost nothing valuable, have you? If the things are like this remaining dirty vest, let them go. Doctor: Yes, let them go. To the new house with new things! 14 Monday, 13December2017 10:00am What a fool I was! I thought poor people like Fide and his family had nothing but poverty. Today I realized my idea was wrong. Poor may lack comforts and luxuries in life. In creativity and craftsmanship they are equal to all. What a beautiful baskets they have made! In their expertise even raffia strings became beautifully patterned baskets. I had only a single idea about Fide. It made in me a single story about him and his family. To have a single story about a person will lead us to make false judgment. The visit to his house has taught me the danger of having a single story about anybody or anything! 15

The True Virtues- Kindness and Compassion Kindness and compassion are really two true virtues. When we read the story ‘The Best Investment I Ever Made’ written Dr AJ Cronin, we will realize the fact further. One of the characters in the story Mr. John had led a loose life in his youthful days. He was an orphan and his uncle found a job for him in the town. Soon he forgot his state and started running after pleasures of life beyond his means. To make money he gambled and even stole some amount from his office. Lost everything, being disappointed and anguished and afraid of a possible prosecution for the theft, he finally resorted in a suicide attempt. The timely intervention and help of three kind-hearted people- the landlady of the lodge where he stayed, a police sergeant and Dr. Cronin - brought him back to a fresh life. He determined to change his life and made a fresh start. He submitted the rest of his life for the charity work. The timely act of kindness and compassion of the three good people saved a young man and in return he lived for others serving the society with all the virtues of his mind.

16 a) Your mother says you started reading at the age of two. Why do you think it probably happened when you were four?

b) Why was your mother obliged to read what you wrote at the age of seven?

c) When and where did you find African books for the first time? d) How old was Fide when he joined as your house boy? e) Have you had any experience or example of having a single story about anybody other than what mentioned in your speech? 17. Martha’s grandfather is probably the most important character in the story. In our mind he will be the winner once we finish reading the full story. His words “if you pay for it, it is not a scholarship jacket” even made the principal change his decision. He is somewhat a rich farmer owning a two-hundred acre ranch. He is seen in the story working in his field always. He is a sort of reserved type but a man of strong determination. Though he is uneducated he believes it is injustice to pay for a deserving award. So he strongly stands with his belief even when his granddaughter cries. Finally, his words win and Martha gets the award. When he hears both sad and happy news of Martha, he expresses almost the same reaction. When she tells him about her winning the jacket, he still doesn’t express his rejoice through words. He just gives her a smile and a pat on her shoulder. As the proverb ‘still waters run deep’, some people will not show overtly their deep love and affection. Martha’s grandfather is a man of this sort. 18. Mr. JOHN LIVES AND LETS OTHERS LIVE MKP, Staff reporter, 13Dec17, Wednesday Thiruvananthapuram: Mr. John shows the world how can a man live and let others live with his own life. He with his wife travels to different parts of the world to learn the methods employed in dealing with cases of backward, maladjusted and delinquent youth. Mr. John once transgressed and led a loose life. He went after worldly pleasure, gambled and became a thief to find money for more pleasures. Having lost everything, finally attempted to suicide. He was saved by three good people including famous Dr AJ Cronin. Now Mr. John and his wife have been for more than 15 years in the field of charity work. He takes derelict adolescents from the juvenile courts and places them in a healthy environment, heals them in mind and body and sends them back into the world. “Once I was saved from the brink of death by three good people unknown to me; my life is their gift. I should pay the debt I owe to them by serving the society with that gift of my life”, Mr. John said.

19 . Vanka- a review “Vanka” is a short story by Anton Chekhov, the famous Russian writer. The plot of the story is the plight of the children who are victims of child labour. The nine year boy Vanka is presented as a representative of children victimized to the social evil of child labour. His innocence and ignorance when writing hopefully a letter to his grandfather and posting it without writing proper address and stamp appeal much to the readers. When his mother died his grandfather sent him to Moscow. He could not complete his primary education. He was apprenticed to Alyakhin, a shoemaker. His master Alyakhin and his wife treated him cruelly. He had to do all household work. They beat him often for silly matters. He was not provided good food or place to sleep. Other apprentices made fun of him. They forced him to steal cucumber and persuaded him to buy vodka from the tavern. In short, the little boy’s life in Moscow was worse than that of a dog’s. He said it in his letter to grandfather and begged him to come and save him from Alyakhin. He also had very strong nostalgic feeling of his village life, especially at the time of Christmas. He liked very much his grandfather’s dogs and Miss Olga, his favorite. His sufferings at his workplace and feelings of homesickness he mentioned in his letter are enough for the readers to experience the bitter taste of the child labour. His begging to his grandfather and his promises are enough to create a dampened mood in readers’ mind and wet their eyes. Anton Chekhov has succeeded in making every reader of Vanka curse severely the evil of child labour.
