AP  English  Literature  and  Composition  Summer  Reading  List  2017                  The  two  works  for  summer  reading    may  be  accessed  on  pdf  or  you  may  order  the  work  .      Please  have   BOTH  works  read  by  the  first  day  of  school.     1) The  Things  They  Carried    by  Tim  O’Brien      (1990)            Twenty-­‐two  vignettes  that  explore  the  author’s  real-­‐life  experiences  while  serving  in  Viet  Nam.   This  modern  classic  explores  the  literary  genre  known  as  “meta-­‐fiction”  in  which  the  author  actively   comments  on  the  process  of  writing.  O’Brien  effectively  uses  many  narrative  techniques  to  create   verisimilitude(a  feeling  of  reality  within  fiction)  .            Tim  O’Brien  uses  the  experiences  of  Alpha  Company  and  its  soldiers-­‐-­‐-­‐Jimmy  Cross,  Norman   Bowker,  “Rat”  Kiley,  Mitchell  Sanders,  Henry  Dobbins,  and  Kiowa-­‐-­‐-­‐  in  order  to  explore  the  depths   of  the  human  condition  amidst  the  in  human  scenarios  of  war.  The  Things  They  Carried    extends  far   beyond  being  categorized  simply  as  “war  literature”  due  to  the  universality  present  in  each  story  .            The  ground-­‐breaking  style  of  Stephen  Crane’s  Red  Badge  of  Courage    (1895)  is  further   modernized  By  Tim  O’Brien.  Crane  developed  the  literary  genres  of  realism  and  naturalism  to   better  expound  the  experiences  of  Private  Henry  Fleming  his  American  Civil  War  novel.     2) No  Country  for  Old  Men    By  Cormac  McCarthy  (2005)              Our  own  era  of  history  is  explored  through  Lewellyn  Moss’  life  intersecting  with  the  murderous   and  insanely  methodical  underworld  of  the  Texas-­‐Mexican  border.  Sheriff  Ed  Tom  Bell  attempts  to   confront  the  anarchy  he  encounters  while  tracking  down  Lewellyn  and  his  pursuers  with  the  same   code  of  morality  that  had  once  served  Sheriff  Bell’s  father    in  the  past.              Cormac  McCarthy  presents  a  world  that  is  as  grotesquely  familiar  as  any  television  broadcast  or   newspaper’s  contents  are  to  any  of  us  today.  Sheriff  Bell’s  italicized  stream  of  consciousness   interludes  function  as  a  kind  of  psychological  Greek  chorus  that  serve  to  take  the  reader  into  the   sheriff’s  past,  present  ,  and  future.                No  Country  for  Old  Men      takes  a  line  from  William  Butler  Yeats’  poem  “Sailing  to   Byzantium”(1925)  as  its  title.  McCarthy  is  also  thematically  linked  to  the  French  philosopher  and   writer  Albert  Camus’  novel  The  Stranger    (1942)  which  explores   nihilism  and  existentialism  in  the  modern  world.     3) Please  purchase  “Cracking  the  AP  English  Literature  and  Composition  Exam”  The  Princeton  Review       ISBN:  978-­‐1-­‐101-­‐91  991-­‐0        /  ISSN:  1092-­‐0099.  This  will  provide  a  good  overview  for  preparing  and   familiarizing  yourself  with  the  various  sections  of  the  AP  English  Literature  test  in  May  2018.
