FROM THE PASTOR “Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus raised from the dead. They gave a dinner for him there, and Martha served, while Lazarus was one of those reclining at table with him. Mary took a liter of costly perfumed oil made from genuine aromatic nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her hair.” (John 12:1-3) This passage from the Gospel of St. John precedes Our Lord’s entry into Jerusalem and sets the stage for his Passion and Resurrection. Additional people are referenced in the longer account: Judas, his betrayer; and the chief priests, who sought to kill both Jesus and Lazarus, who is a living example of Our Lord’s saving work to those who do not know him. All these people stand as examples of the choice that Easter puts before us. Where do we stand on the claim that Jesus rose from the dead? St. Matthew tells us that the chief priests and Pharisees were envious of Jesus. That is, after already being opposed to him for blasphemy, they were not only jealous of his popularity, but sought to destroy him, even conspiring with their enemies, the Romans, to accomplish their goals. Some people’s choice is to bury the Resurrection. Judas is different. He is the treasurer of the community of disciples who steals from the money bag. He betrays Jesus, but then regrets it in despair. Judas flees the choice he must make as to whether Jesus is God or not. He just wants to continue with a life of his own making, wishing Jesus had never called him to be a disciple. Then there is the family that is so close to Jesus: Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. They are the example of those who accept Christ for who He is. Martha serves him, Mary worships him, and Lazarus, whom Jesus saved from death, accepts his friendship and, by his witness, brings others into that friendship as well. Martha, Mary, and Lazarus together show all of us what it is to live in the joy of the Resurrection. HAVE A BLESSED AND HAPPY EASTER!!
