2. What is your Mandarin personal goal?

3. Why did you choose this goal?

I chose this goal because I think it's very fun to learn songs. It's easy to understand and easy to remember because it's associated with a melody and a lot of times rhymes. Yes

I chose this goal to enhance my sentence quality and so that I don't use same vocabularies over and over. Yes I chose this goal because I want to improve my writing and reading for Chinese. I want to be more 'exposed' to ordinary Chinese sentences, daily conversation which can also help me with my speaking. The examples and My personal goal is : exercises in the grammar book are usually sentences, to improve my grammar and vocabulary by doing vocabulary and grammar point that are used daily. This is the exercises in the grammar point book. the reason why I picked this goal to improve my writing but to make flashcards on the vocabulary that I learn at the same time to speak more like a native speaker. Yes To study chinese songs (learn vocab and grammar points) I needed a fun way to learn vocabulary and grammar points. Because I love listening to music, I thought it was a great way to approach new vocabulary and grammar points. This also allows me to approach these new things naturally, not in a forced way. I'm not saying learning vocabulary off of a list is a bad way of learning, since you can get so much out of doing that, but I also wanted a more natural approach to new things in order to keep it in my brain for a longer amount of time rather than quickly learning them and forgetting them the next day. Learn radicals (from pink sheet) I chose this goal because if I know a lot of radicals, it can be a great help when learning new vocab. Radicals are such useful hints to new vocabulary.

To study chinese songs (learn vocab and grammar points) Learn radicals (from pink sheet) Study idioms

My Mandarin personal goal is to expand my vocabulary and I have chosen to do so by learning about a song that I really like. I aim to be able to understand the meaning of the song and learn about the grammar points as well as the new vocabulary. My personal goal is to pick atleast 2 songs, one in Mandarin and translate it in english and be able to understand what the song means and be able to pick words that are relevant for me to be able to use those words to expand my vocabulary. Also, one in English and be able to translate the song in Mandarin. (歌: 你要的爱 和 Happy (快乐))

Study idioms Along with increasing fluency in my speaking and writing, studying idioms will able to give more depth into my speaking/writing and more elegance.

I chose this goal because I have never done this before and I wanted to try something new.

As a person who likes music, I chose to do this goal to be able to enhance my vocabulary using the words that I think will be useful for me in my Chinese career and be able to use them correctly. Yes

My personal goal for Mandarin is to pass HSK 4 test soon later.

4/7/2014 19:52:09 Mandarin 3C

My Mandarin personal goal is to finish learning one Mandarin song and to learn on Chinese picture book. Also, my goal is to learn Chinese radicals.

I chose this goal because I believe that this goal is very practical and it also give me challenge which can motivate me to improve on Mandarin. Yes I chose learning a song, so I would have more fun learning Chinese words and grammar while learning my favorite song. I chose learning Chinese radicals so I could expand my knowledge on Chinese vocabulary and so that I could apply the radicals I learned in finding the meaning of words. Finally, I chose to learn a Chinese picture book Yes

My personal goal is to read Chinese stories

I choose this goal to improve my reading and learn new vocabs

My goal was to learn 4 new words per week and have a conversation with laoshi every 2 class.

I chose to learn words that I find useful to me. By learning words that are usually for my everyday usage, it will help me with expressing my thoughts and getting my idea across with both writing and speaking. By having a conversation with laoshi every 2 class, it will help me to improve my speaking skills.

I use MDBG or Google translate to search for the words that I don't know. Other than that, I prefer to write on My goal wouldn't be much different currently because I paper, like on the grammar am currently using the grammar book for my goal book and making flashcards. mostly.

I think having time to work on our personal goal I don't think there's a difference but of course I would like to does improve our motivation because we really be able to have some time for my goals at school so that I don't wish to work on it at home and may don't have to spend so much time at home. sometimes even forget about it.

I think that it does motivate me to learn because we get to choose our own topic and I would choose the topic that we are interested in but we dont really have a chance to cover it in class, and It doesn't really affect my personal goals if I am working on that should motivate everyone to learn based on it from home or class. their own interests and needs. Definitely yes, since it is a chance to learn what we want to learn, and we have the chance to work on the area that we feel like we need. However, I feel like we had too little time to work on this. We For me it was very hard to work on the goal independently. have started it sooner, but we only had few class Honest the first reason what that it was hard to really times to work on this. Then we were to work on it 'concentrate' an hour to ONLY work on my goal. Also the on our own, but this way way very hard to keep up other factor was that in class I had all the materials such as with. So I think we really need to lengthen the the book and flashcards I needed to look at, and actually frequency of having class times that we really get the grammar, vocabularies out of. concentrate on goals.

I prefer to work in the class because I can ask Tsai lao shi if I have any questions about the exercises and she can also explain to me more about the grammar points that I am learning.

Yes it does because I can do what I want to focus on, which is my grammar. Also, I like doing grammar exercises because I think I learn a lot from those as well as doing classwork.

I prefer working in class because there are so many distractions at home. In class, I'm more motivated and less likely to go off task. I think I am much more productive in class than home.

I think it's a great motivation to learn mandarin because we choose to study the things we want and get an opportunity to look into the things we are interested in while learning mandarin.

I don't think it makes any difference where I work on my personal goals because I use my laptop to work on my goals so it doesn't matter where, as long as I have my laptop, I will be fine.

Yes I think it does provides me with motivation in learning Mandarin because at home I sometimes get distracted and end up doing other things instead of working on my goal. When I'm at school I'm surrounded by my classmates who are also doing the same thing as I am and that really motivates me to study.

Firstly, I definitely would not have studied Chinese songs. That would have been too much of a hassle. And to be honest, I'm not that sure if I would have chosen to study radicals since I usually search up meanings and usage examples of the radicals. However, I would have studied idioms because there is a great book in the classroom to help me with that. If there is no integration of technology I don't think my studies would be as effective since I wouldn't be able to get help when I work on my goals at home. I would then only be able to work on my goals in class and get I used Nciku, Google Doc and help from 老师. Plus, Google Docs allow me to study at other places other than at home which is really Youtube when I work on my convenient. goals. and any sites that pop up on google when I search things like "pinyin lyrics to ‘最浪漫的 事’"

MDBG, Nciku, Pop-Up Dictionary, Youtube I usually use MDBG to find any vocabularies that I don't know. I prefer MDBG over Nciku cause I think MDBG provide many more information about characters such as related words, related radical and also the difficulty of the words. Moreover, I really like about Google Chrome pop up dictionary, which I can instantly know the definition and pronunciation. I used MDBG, Nciku, and the Google Chrome pop-up dictionary to find the meaning of the words. I also used Google Doc to record my evidence.

Yes

All the work, both the evidence and working process would be on paper. It would be also bit difficult to find what I need (definition, example sentences).

Without technology, I think I won't be able to reach this goal of mine because I need Youtube to listen to the music that I'm translating, without technology I think my goal would be so much easier than my goal is right I prefer working in class because I work more productively now. when I work during class than at home.

Definitely, because having a personal goal pushes my learning into the next level. Having a personal goal helps me to discover my ability in learning independently and discover in what ways I learn best. In fact, my personal goal helps my motivation to learn Mandarin because I can have fun while learning Chinese.

I think my goal would have been different since technology gives me much better time to find definition for vocabularies. Therefore, if I didn't have technology, I may learn less words with more efficiency but as a I don't think the location matters since wherever I am, I can student who need to learn large volume of bring my laptop which is basically the only thing I need for vocabularies, I prefer learning with technology. my goals.

It does give me the motivation to learn Mandarin since as I learn new things, it keeps me interest in learning Mandarin and also motivate me to learn even more about Mandarin.

I would have used a paper dictionary to find all the meanings of the words and would have written my evidence on a notebook, but other than that, my goals wouldn't have been done differently.

I prefer working at class because I have all the material needed for my goals in class like the Chinese picture books I think it does because every time I learn a new and the radical textbook. Also, if I have any problems, I can radical, I earn the confidence and motivation to ask the teacher for help. learn new vocabulary. I think doing personal goal is kind of hard to study no difference, I will still use the dictionary manually to It doesn't really make a difference because they both because you are by yourself, and I think I enjoy search up my vocabs provide us time to study learning as a group more I think having time to work on our personal goal makes me feel independent and respected in terms of my learning. Because I do not have to learn what I don't want to learn or what I don't think is useful, I get to chose and so I feel like my I will have to look at what each words mean by the learning is dependent on what I do. I also feel book dictionary. Then I would have to record down my respected because I get to choose what to learn sentences by writing them on the notebook and then I don't think it makes a difference where you work on your and how to learn it. I get to do it my own way and my laoshi will have to make comments on my personal goal. Either way, we still have to finish our goal so the way that works for me and so I think having a notebook but not the Google Doc. yea :) personal goal helps me a lot.

My goal is to learn new words and the radical of each word. After this I will write 5 sentences with the new word I have learned in order to reinforce my learning.

3. Why did you choose this goal? I chose this goal because radicals make up every chinese character therefore if I were able to learn more radicals, I would be able to know definitions of the word from piecing the radical meanings together. Radical meanings also give me a sense of chinese culture and how people thought like back then. Yes

5. What type of technology do you use when you work on your goals?

Nciku, Mdbg, Google doc Use 3000 Chinese characters dictionary I use YouTube, Nciku, MDBG, Google Doc, Google Chrome pop up dictionary, grammar points from the pink book and comments from Tsai Laoshi. Google Doc, Nciku, MBDG, Chrome, Google Translate I used Youtube mostly, for both the movie and the song, and google docs to keep document of the progress I made, and for any teacher comments.

6. How will your goals be done differently or possibly having different goals if there is no integration of technology?

I will document my goals in my journal and I will use dictionary to find the words. However, this would take a lot more time. I don't think it will affect much

I would make my own music using new vocabularies and use new grammar point, learned from the grammar book. I would not have been able to do this goal and perhaps would switch to reading a book since it would not be possible to watch a movie without technology

My goals would probably be of reading a book, and I would use flash cards to keep documentation of my progress.

7. In these past 2 weeks you sometimes worked on your personal goals at home rather than in the class. Which one 8. Do you think having time to work on your do you prefer, to work in the class or at home? does it personal goal improves your motivation in learning make any difference where you work on your personal Mandarin? If it does, please explain why or why goals? why? not?

I prefer to work in class because I am able to ask Tsai Lao Shi if I am unsure about the sentences because sometimes nciku gives me very complicated sentences that are hard to understand. I think working either way is fine because we are still learning something that will benefit us

It does not really matter to me because I listen to my song both at school and at home. i am happy with both places but doing at home as a homework gives little pressure.

I think it does because we get to learn new things that interest us. I think it does because we are learning something we want to learn so it's more fun

I would prefer working in class due to easier to concentrate.

Yes, It definitely motivates me of learning new vocabularies and grammar points because I want to understand and sing the song fast. Yes. Because personal goals allow me to specifically address aspects that i personally want to improve upon

I prefer to work in class, because at home there are many distractions. Also, in class, we can ask any questions spontaneously as there are the peers and also Cai Laoshi to help us.

I think it definitely improves our motivation in learning Chinese, because it allows us to choose what movie or song to learn from, and whatever it is, it's usually entertaining to us.
