From the Music Director Dear Friends, During the Easter Season it is the Church’s tradition to sing the Marian hymn Regina Caeli, which is #188 in our hymnal. To honor Our Lady and to expand our repertoire, I thought it would be appropriate to sing this lovely Easter Hymn, which comes in both the original Latin and English translations, after Communion. The Regina Caeli is one for the four Marian Antiphons which are sung seasonally throughout the Liturgical Year: 1. The Regina Caeli (Queen of Heaven) is sung from the Easter Vigil until Pentecost. 2. The Salve Regina (Hail, Holy Queen) from the Monday after Pentecost until Advent. 3. The Alma Redemptoris Mater (Nourishing Mother of the Redeemer) from Advent until Candlemas (Feb 2nd). 4. The Ave Regina Caelorum ( Hail, Queen of Heaven) from Candlemas until the Easter Vigil. Due to fortunate widespread devotion of the Rosary, many Catholics are at least familiar with the Hail, Holy Queen, but all these hymns were originally sung in monasteries and convents as part of the last communal prayers of the day (the structure of prayers throughout the day are known as the Divine Office). The four anthems date from the eleventh to twelfth centuries when there was a deepening devotion to Mary's intercessory role in the drama of our salvation. The current form of the Regina Caeli is found in Franciscan books used for reciting the Office as early as the twelfth century, but its recitation is rooted in even more ancient legend. Pope Gregory the Great (6th century) heard the first three verses being sung by angels on Easter Sunday morning as he was leading a procession of an icon of the Virgin, which tradition claims was painted by Saint Luke. Saint Gregory was then inspired to add the fourth verse himself. The Regina Caeli is part of our great tradition of Catholic hymnody. When we sing it in Latin we will unite ourselves with the historic, universal Church. When we sing it in English we will make it part of our celebration of the glorious Easter Season. Happy Easter! John Donovan
