The Seven Last Words

Knowing Jesus Christ

By:Fulton Sheen April 10th Topic Life In The Spirit of Jesus

Please join Maria Blewitt and Rosemarie DeLacy for three meetings this Lent to discuss Bishop Sheen’s book, The Seven Last Words. The book is available on amazon.com as either a Kindle book or a paperback. We will reflect upon and talk about the first and second words on March 14, the third and fourth words on March 28, and the fifth, sixth and seventh words on April 11. The book is short, so the expected reading preparation time should be manageable. Dates: Tuesday, April 11 When: 7:00-8:00 pm Where: Parish Center Questions? Please call Maria Blewitt at: (617) 6400458. Want to let us know you’re coming? Please call the Parish Office at (781) 944-0330.

Because Jesus is God the Son, we believe that He makes it possible for us to live a different life than the world offers. Join Fr. Colarusso to learn more deeply the Catholic Church’s teachings about our Lord. Mondays, 7:00 - 8:30pm, Parish Center

LENTEN GOSPEL GIVING To assist St. Athanasius parish families to support the practice of almsgiving, especially in the Lenten season, we are encouraged to participate in our IN ADDITION, because the needs are so great, and appeals so numerous again this year: From HOLY THURSDAY: APRIL 13 through Sunday APRIL 23 (Holy Thursday through the second Sunday

Please plan to come on Lenten Wednesdays and spread the word of this outreach of mercy to those you know.

Reasons to STOP Swearing (Excerpted from James Donlon’s “8 Reasons to Stop Cussing” at https://www.tfpstudentaction.org/blog)

Swearing is like a virus. It has spread virtually everywhere: TV, movies, music, books, and daily conversation. Like every bad habit, it's hard to stop. So here are some compelling reasons to kick the bad habit and STOP cussing. 1. It’s not a sign of strength Vulgarity doesn't breed character and virtue. In fact, George Washington issued the following order in 1776: "The General is sorry to be informed that the foolish, and wicked practice of profane cursing and swearing (a vice heretofore little known in an American Army) is growing into fashion; he hopes the officers will, by example, as well as influence, endeavor to check it, and that both they, and the men will reflect, that we can have little hopes of the blessing of Heaven on our Arms, if we insult it by our impiety, and folly; added to this, it is a vice so mean and low, without any temptation, that every man of sense, and character, detests and despises it." 2. Swearing Degrades Us and Broadcasts Bad Example Foul language, cussing, and cursing are vulgar, indecent, and irreverent. The constant use of foul language drags us down and undermines mutual respect. For example, if a teacher uses foul language in the classroom, he shows an appalling lack of respect for his students, no self-control, and irreverence for his position as teacher. For good or for ill, the example we give in our speech is noticed and imitated. The words we use cause an impact on our peers and our example is educational, particularly to children. 3. It Harms Civilization The art of conversation is one of the most important traits of civilization. Elevated conversation sets true civilization apart from barbarism. When each word is used in its proper context, human relations are cultivated and elevated. There's nothing more uplifting than good conversation. Cussing, however, wreaks havoc on good conversation and drags human relations into the mud of banality and vulgarity. Our unruly passions welcome cussing. 4. Cussing Spreads Verbal and Mental Poverty With upwards of 200,000 words, the English language is incredibly rich. All sorts of descriptive and interesting words are at our disposal to help us craft ideas full of meaning and purpose. However, people can frequently use the same cuss word to describe joy, rage, surprise, and approval and disapproval. As a result, speech is rendered meaningless and the mind is impoverished. As the Irish proverb goes: “Profanity is ignorance made audible.”

Tips to Break the Cussing Habit: 1. Do five pushups every time you cuss. 2. Put five dollars in a jar when you cuss. 3. Ask a friend to give up cussing with you. 4
