FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S LAPTOP Tēnā koutou katoa Thank you to all the parents/caregivers who have managed to meet with teachers in relation to their child’s progress over the last six months. In our busy lives it is sometimes hard to fit everything in, but your child benefits from your interest and the sharing of information in relation to where to next for them on their learning journey. National Standards and the requirements of National Standards for reporting to the Ministry of Education, and also how we report to you as parents, is continuing to evolve. For instance the Ministry of Education is now requiring schools to provide National Standards data for students at the Year 1 - 3 levels with birthdays in January and February in the November of the previous year. This means that this year these children will receive three written reports and the opportunity for three student/parent/teacher conferences. The school’s newly revised written reports will also come into use from this month onwards. The changes we have made to our written reports enable teachers to show a child’s progress over time and brings the ‘General’ and ‘National Standards’ reports into the one report. Book Week What a great way to start the term. We were delighted to see all the creative costumes at the Book Character Parade. Thank you to Mrs Quinn for organising this fun event.

Vet Assembly On Monday Emily Roose and George Smith from Franklin Vets spoke to the children about caring for their farm animals before Ag Day. Emily’s talk covered the basic needs of the calves, chicks, lambs and kids, plus some of the diseases they might suffer from and when to get expert help. ANZAC Flag At Tuesday’s Assembly Tracey Shackleton, Papakura Town Centre Manager, presented Leo A the school’s Student Council Chairperson with one of the ANZAC flags which has been hanging in the Papakura Town Centre to celebrate the 100 Year Anniversary of WW1. The businesses in the town centre decided to donate one of the commemorative flags to each of the Papakura Schools. A magnificent gesture.

Congratulations... ECCS Hockey Aiofe P was part of the winning ECCS Hockey team who competed last week in the Zone competition. They now go on to compete in the Auckland Champion of Champions Tournament.

ECCS Netball Well done to Kate W, Renee P, Paris M, Erin T, Tianna P who all played yesterday in the ECCS Netball Competition. Their respective teams all made it to the semi-finals, with Paris’ team coming second in their competition. Bad Jelly the Witch Colouring Competition Hayley-Marie L, Yin Chu C, and Meikayla K were their age group winners in the colouring competition run by Rosehill College as part of their Bad Jelly the Witch production. Wai Care Congratulations to the Wai Care group who won three books as the result of taking part in March Monitoring Month. This involved the group working with Sophie from Wai Care, a council initiative. The group went down to our local Taitaia Stream and carried a number of tests to monitor the health of the stream. The children entered the data on line and it was due to the quality of their work that they won these great resources for our school.

Sick Children Reminder We would remind you again to keep sick children at home as there is still a high incidence of ill health going through the school. We have also had one reported case of Whooping Cough so would encourage you to get your child checked by a doctor if they are unwell with coughs, temperatures, sore throats, tummy upsets etc. We would also recommend keeping your child home the next day if they have been sent home from school ill.
