Naomi: A Mother’s Hurt, A Mother’s Heart And A Mother’s Hope Ruth 1-4 Pastor Andy Kvernen
Naomi: A Mother’s Hurt, A Mother’s Heart, and A Mother’s Hope
At Home Study Guide For the week of May 8, 2016 Mother’s Day provides a great opportunity for us to look at the life of one prominent mom in the Hebrew Scriptures. In the book of Ruth, we are introduced to a faithful Hebrew mom, Naomi. She, her husband, and two sons leave Israel during a drought to find a better life. Her sons marry and then tragically the men in Naomi’s life die. One of the daughters-in-law travels back to Israel with Naomi as she returns home. This young woman, Ruth becomes an important part of Israel’s future as the greatgrandmother of King David, in the line of Jesus. We can learn much from a study of Naomi’s journey as we see her hurt, her heart, and her hope.
Does your family look forward to Mother’s Day? Why or why not?
Read Ruth 1. What stands out to you about the situation for Israel and Naomi’s family? Why was leaving Israel a good thing or bad thing for them?
What do you learn about the character of God from these scriptures? Isaiah 66:13 Hosea 11:3-4 Matthew 22:37

Many of us experience tremendous pain at some point during our life. Grief is normal for everyone but sometimes the pain we experience can cause us to doubt God’s love. How can these verses in Ruth 1 as well as Romans 8:28 and Romans 5:1-5 serve to encourage you the next time you experience the pains of life?
Take a moment to reflect and even consider memorizing John 16:33. Why is this truth about Jesus so hopeful to you personally?
