Newton South 21’

The away fixture at Newton South is always challenging. The bus ride is long and the environment can be sterile so intensity can be difficult to manufacture. The Colonials got off to a sluggish start but eventually got themselves into the game although there were few chances generated during these opening moments. The home team struck on a rare foray deep into the Acton-Boxborough end to score against the run of play. The goal was taken well by the Newton South player. This seemed to be the spark that the Colonials needed to spring them into life as their game took on greater urgency. After a good spell of possession and pressure, Steve DeLeo pulled the Colonials level in the 33rd minute. Adam Waks made a darting run on the edge of the penalty area to receive a pass that he laid back for DeLeo who saw the keeper off his line. DeLeo chipped the goalkeeper on his first touch and saw the ball nestle into the far corner of the net for what was a very classy finish. The Colonials pushed for the go ahead goal which they found just two minutes later. Waks danced his way across the endline on the left side of the goal to pull back for Evan Kaminski who had taken up an excellent position in the box. His first time shot beat the goalkeeper but struck the base of the right post. The rebound fell to Stewart who blasted the ball past the goalkeeper for the eventual game winner. There were numerous chances to extend the lead throughout the game but the Colonials could not capitalize. Stewart’s goal proved to be enough as the Colonials who had numerous players step up on a day when some individual performances were not at their normally high level. It was a testament to the quality and desire in the team to get a result under challenging circumstances.
